Fuselage Quality

I don't know anything or anyone as Ola mentioned it in a Facebook post and I started a conversation with Bill last October hoping for a response which never came, so took this opportunity to inquire again.

I started a thread (I think) asking for assistance on this and nobody provided an answer. Hopefully Bill or Barry or Doug can supply one.

Any assistance will be most welcome so I can provide the answer.

Bill and Kevin both have large libraries of numbers and dates. It has been my experience that when they are forthcoming with information people want more, then a line forms. It has to be frustrating for them .

Been trying to find info on that V26 myself. For the "V2*" codes I have -
V21 - 1969-71 - Hood Performance Paint Treatment
V22 - 1970-71 - Delete - Sport Hood Treatment
V23 - 1969-70 - Delete - Paint Body Side
V24 - 1970-71 - Hood Performance Paint Treatment with Engine Call Out
V25 - 1972-74 - Deck Performance Treatment

I've never seen that particular code so I don't know anything about it.
I'm more of a B body guy so on E body questions, I go to Barry, Ola or Dan Pausch.

Say a number telling how many 71 Dodge Polaras and Monacos came out of Belvidere alone and etc with other years and models.

The Wards books: wards automotive | eBay help give some info on that. Pictures provided by Diego Rosenberg.

Wards shows 143,072 Fury's and 91,577 Polaras out of the Belvidere plant for MY 1971.

This is what Bill reported in post 36.

So according to this...91,577 Polaras built in Belvidere Assembly and another 20,871 were built in Delaware...but I've read total Polara Production for 1971 was 97,815... I'm no math magician, but something doesn't quite add up.

Which is why you always have to be careful as to the source of the numbers and what they are reporting. Who's reporting it? What's the original source? US sold/shipped? Total?

Are they reporting the main line model I.e. Belvedere platform including Belvedere, Satellite, Sport Satellite, Road Runner and GTX or the specific sub model badged cars?

It has been my experience that when they are forthcoming with information people want more, then a line forms. It has to be frustrating for them .

What can get frustrating is when you give someone exactly what they are looking for, you may not even get a simple "Thank You".

If you notice, their numbers don’t balance between the two pictures.
If you add the numbers from Belvedere to Newark, and look at the total in the second picture, there is 632 car difference.

92,557+ 20,871 = 113,428
Vs 112,796.

The white book shows a total production figure of 83,292 DS, DE, DL, and DM Polara badged cars.
Taxis and police cars are not listed.
It shows 22,370 DH Monaco badged cars.

The white book accounts for 105,662 cars.

To balance, that leaves either 7,134 or 7,766 taxis and police cars built. I don’t know the production numbers on fleet cars like that but that “seems high” to me.

Regardless, you always have to be careful with production numbers.

If you are looking for production by sub model (DE, DS, DL, etc) by plant (How many DL** built at Newark), my guess is they were available in an end of year report for the plant and submitted to Corporate then Corporate combined the numbers for all the plants. Plant breakdowns by sub models may exist but I don’t know anything about them.

It's all very well mentioning names as you did above, however some like me have never heard of, nor have contact details for these men.

I was hoping to assist Ola as it was his Facebook post I saw.

The 97,815 figure is the total number of 1971 Polara and Monaco models built for the U.S. market (77,087 at Belvidere and 20,728 at Newark).

Now, if you check the Ward's figures, 91, 577 were built at Belvidere and 20,871 at Newark for a total of 112,448 while their total figure comes to 112,796. We have a difference of 348. If you look at the comment on the bottom of the plant production figures for Michigan there is a note stating 29,952 cars were built in Michigan as K.D. export cars (built at Chrysler's export plant on Wyoming Ave), and those cars are not included in the Michigan figures. So, those 348 missing cars were actually 348 K.D. cars built at the Wyoming Avenue plant (from 1937 through 1958 the DeSoto assembly plant and 1960 to 1980 for export K.D. production).

And we now have 14,633 cars unaccounted for (14,490 at Belvidere and 143 at Newark). Those 14,633 cars were built for the Canadian market.

Thus -
Belvidere - 91,577 (77,087 USA and 14,490 CDN)
Newark - 20,871 (20,728 USA and 143 CDN)
Wyoming - 348 (348 Exp)
TOTAL - 112,796 (97,815 USA, 14,633 CDN and 348 Exp)

Ward's did not always separate the export totals so you have to watch out for them.

Thanks. Nice accounting for the export cars.

Does the, roughly, 7,000 fleet cars sound about right?

I’m missing something. How are you accounting for the break out of US vs CA by plant?

Chrysler Canada was always a bit of a mystery back then. Our '71 Monaco was built there. Unlike US Monacos, it came standard with a 318. I suppose there are other trim/equipment changes I was unaware of. Earlier in the 1960s they built C-body Dodges with Plymouth dashboards. It is probably best to always keep the Canadian production figures separate from the US ones as the cars are not necessarily the same. They may have built some other models that made their way into the US market but I do not know that for sure.

I have two annual reports from Chrysler Corporation - Production in US and Canada for the American market for the 1965 to 1969 model years. The second is for shipments to the American market from Canadian and US plants for the 1970 to 1973 model years.

The shipment reports the number of cars shipped in total from each assembly plant. Also, the shipment report lists the shipments for each body style for the the American market. The production report lists the total of each body style produced at the US plants and production of body styles at Windsor. But it does not record how many body styles were produced at each plant for the US market. Neither report as any details on what was produced for, or shipped to, Canada. However, the shipment reports record how many cars of each car line, in total, were shipped from each plant for the U.S. market.

Shipments and Production are not the same, by the way. Production records the number of cars that rolled off the assembly lines and the final tallies are made when after the last car of the model year rolls off the line.

Shipments records the number of cars shipped from the factories and storage lots to dealers, etc. The final tallies are made when the last car leaves the lot. The 1971 model year ended in July, and the last shipment report was filed at the end of August, 1971. Not bad. The final 1970 shipment report was filed at the end of September, 1970.

The totals for the production and shipment reports in the end should, in theory, be the same.
