My newly acquired 68 Fury III's gas gauge does not work. The seller told me up front about it...and said "it works sporadically." Although I've only put a few miles on it thus far, I've yet to see it work at all. It has not risen off E yet for me. Since I'm doing the rear brakes right now, I've got a good shot of the backside of the tank. Looks to me like I might not have to drop the tank to get the float/sending unit out. True? Or perhaps I don't even have to go that far yet? Any help/advice I'd really appreciate it.
Looks like someone has been in here before to try and fix the problem...probably the former owner as he told me he checked and made sure the ground was good.

Thanks, Bob

There should be a ground strap that runs from the fuel line to the sender. I don't see one.

Looks like someone ran that black wire from the sending unit to the body. It's possible that's not making good contact, definitely not the factory method of grounding.

i was gonna say the same thing. . . it looks like someone added a wire.

a ground strap is like 4 bucks, get a fresh one :)

you can R&R the sending unit with about 1/2 tank full still in,, open it up and let er go into a pan on the ground.

keep your original lock ring, the reman lock ring is thin and will not fit well.

change out all the rubber connectos - at tank, at frame passthru under passenger, frame passthru at engine compartment, at fuel pump, at filter, at carb.

try ground strap first unless you already have fuel delivery issues - leave the sending unit in there, ground strap it, and see what you got.

no smoking, no sparks. no pilot lights. unhook the battery. be outside. you are gonna have some fumes.

try not to die -

And no incandescent trouble light under there either.......... experience talking here.

I did this on my fury without dropping the tank. The rubber ring had started to crack and seep gas when the tank was full.

Drain the tank if you can, or wait until you think it's fairly empty. Be prepared to reek like gas for a day or so.

Don't get the cheap spectra sending unit, they are usually mis-calibrated. I had to send 2 back before spending the extra $$ to get one that wasn't made by spectra.

Test the new sending unit with a multi-meter.

My sending unit tested fine using the multi-meter, but the gauge still only reads 1/4 tank when full. I think it's a gauge issue and will investigate further once I move to working on the interior.

Good luck!

**By far the absolute most important tool to have for this job:**

***FIRE EXTINGUISHER***

Try the correct ground strap first.

Then remove the sending unit, inspect, and replace unit or brass float as necessary.

Hope the input helps.

John

P.S. Don't forget the fire extinguisher.

So I take it I should clean off a spot on the fuel line with some fine sandpaper...take the black wire off the frame and attach it to the clean area of the fuel line...like with a small hose clamp? This would be the first step to test...I'll get a ground strap to finalize. Good to know I don't have to the drop the tank if it needs a new float/sender.

Thanks very much guys....I appreciate the concern for my welfare too,

I have a fire extinguisher and will have it nearby...

As long as it's the fuel line going into the tank, after the hose.

The wire that is there (that I didn't notice) may already be grounding the sender, so I would just check continuity to ground at the sender first. If you have a good ground there, take the sender wire off and connect it to ground. The fuel gauge should read full. That will check the wiring and do a rough check of the gauge.

From there it's time to pull the sender out. The float may just be leaking or the sender itself has an issue.

each end of that thing ^^ should touch metal fuel line. one end touches the sendo tube, it skips over the rubber connecto piece, and the other end touches the main fuel line going away from tank.

The factory ground strap almost always works better and looks like this:

Where would I get one of these? If I can't get one, would a generic grounding strap with a couple of tiny hose clamps work?

Go to eBay and search for vansauto.

I bought them from them.

They sell the sending unit as well.

Thanks John...actually I just did a search on e-bay and found the grounding strap. "For Cuda and Roadrunner" but states it fits 1968 Fury too. You've also answered my next question...if in fact I need a new sending unit.

Additional question: What's the deal with the other 2 tubes on the right in the photos I posted...I take it they're the vents?...but they run up into the trunk where they meet each other. In other words they're the same tube. How is that a vent?

Thanks so much...

It's kind of hard to tell in your pics, but the vent lines don't look original.

I'll have to take a look at one of my cars that is in the middle of a tank swap to refresh my memory.

I'll be at the shop tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

Went out tonight, pulled the sender wire...grounded it...turned key on...gauge went up to F so apparently gauge is ok. Then I took a wire with alligator clips on both ends and clipped one on fuel line before rubber connector and the other on the fuel line after the rubber connector...turned key on and gauge still registered E. I guess it's time to pull the sender...(tomorrow).

Funny thing...after pulling sender wire and then putting it back on I noticed the stud that the sender wire mounts on was loose...then I felt it wet. Darn thing started leaking after I messed with it. I wound up siphoning out 13 gallons of gas tonight because I saw the leak stain getting bigger. I think that should be low enough to pull the sender tomorrow.

Looked at the vent tubes a little closer. There's two vent tubes...one goes up into trunk and back out...the other has a "loop" at the top and is open at the top of the Shock mount.

Thanks for your help all...

Bob

Sounds like you got a handle on the sender, I would change the vent hoses though, looks like they are leaking judging by the stains and what looks like a wet spot.

You know...now that you mention it, I have to agree with you...but those rubber connections look to be fairly new. I'll check them while I'm working on everything back there. I pulled the sender yesterday. The connection inside came off rivet which holds it to the wire sender stud....plus the brass float is taking on gas. I'm working on repairing it...initial testing confirms I've fixed the broken wire as gauge now works as I raise and lower float...Several attempts at soldering holes up on float not going well though. I'm testing my solder patches but float is still taking on (water now) as I'm submerging in a container filled with water in kitchen sink. (I have a very patient wife)

Vans Auto sells the float:

Mopar Ford Gas Fuel Tank Sending Unit Brass Float New Mercury Lincoln Chrysler | eBay

$10 and free shipping.

From your description of the vent lines, they are correct. I'm still trying to get to the shop for reference pics.
