Gas gauge help

Van's auto also has replacement vent lines. Give them a call and get everything. Good luck.

This is what I have done thus far to the sending unit. Looks to me like this is an aftermarket sender. Not that I'm and expert by any means but from what you guys said about the ground strap and all...this was obviously tampered with before I got in here. Besides, it looks suspiciously shiny and new. Note rivet on sending unit end that's still in place. That's what was broken on the mounting plate end. I drilled it out and found a hex head bolt to replace it. So now there's good electrical contact. And as far as the float goes, after inspection with a magnifying glass, I soldered up the holes/submerged float into a container of water. It took several tries but I finally found success. The leaks were caused from punctures (in recessed groove) when pressing float into place on holder bracket. It was sharp at the very end of the float holder bracket, so I filed that down. That seemed to be the culprit in doing damage to the soft brass float. Did one last submerge test AFTER pressing float into bracket too. Hopefully gauge will work as it should after installing sender into tank and refilling with gas.

Thanks all for your help. Thought some photos would be the least I could do here to let you all know I appreciate your help.

cool to see someone actually repair something. most people wouldn't even try this. hope it goes well.
Thanks Rags...I installed the sender yesterday, dumping about 14 gallons of gas back in the tank afterwards. The gas gauge came up to almost 1/2. I expected it to rise to more than 1/2 but who knows? Maybe there's a big reserve in these tanks? When I removed the sender a few days ago, I did empty the tank out pretty good. I bet I pumped another 2-3 gallons out from the sender hole too (which was probably the reserve).

both my '65 and '69 have to RUN for some time before the fuel gauges will max out. couple of miles from home and they'll read actual. had to wonder about the weight of the solder, but if it floats on top of water it should be good (although gas isn't as dense). great to see a positive result. SG

I have the same issue with my fuel gauge. Previous owner put in a new tank and sending unit, so I figured it must be good. Today I got around to pulling the wire and grounding it and the gauge went all the way up. I guess I'll assume its the cheap ebay spectra unit. Can you guys point me to a good quality sending unit?? Thanks!
