Getting rich on Rage-Bait... most YouTube car pages suck.

I started writing a reply to the RareClassicCars 1967 Imperial video, but then I realized the trend is a whole lot bigger than this. These guys aren't stupid... They know that virtually any car has a fanbase and that by using keywords like "worst, failure, flop, dud, etc." in the title/description their videos will end up on sites like this and Fakebook pages. And that equals clicks which then equals cash. I'll start with Adam's page...

When he first came on the scene, I thought "wow, that's cool. Videos on something other than musclecars!". But the thrill didn't last long as I got tired of long winded tropes about ballast resistors, Lean Burn (which wasn't even trying for lean-burns by 1978), etc. Then I realized he's also playing the role of intellectual by repeating a lot of what was written 20 years ago in higher-brow magazines like Collectible Automobile. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that mixing a lot of obscure trivia with your own dumb opinions builds a fanbase status that isn't justified. I'm fully convinced the guy is just mailing it in now by clipping photos off the web, leaving them on screen for 3-4 minutes while he drones on. For cripes sake, you could at least use a free screen recorder program and move the cursor around to the various features you're talking about.

In particular, his 1967 Imperial video (to be fair, there was no way I was sitting through the full 15 minutes) just starts with a static image of someone's for-sale posting while he makes the case that Imperial faded away by repeating the dopey criticism that it was somehow wrong to move away from a 10-year-old frame, cowl section, bubble windshield and seating position that kept the Imperial in the 1950s. Going to a rigid unibody structure, with plenty of drivetrain and suspension isolation was the right move. A real deep-dive might have mentioned that spending a LOT of money on 95% unique "visual" items and ending up with a profile that looks very similar to a '67 Plymouth Fury was the real culprit. And then of course the failure to properly market the car... I always found it interesting the in 1969 they made a half-hearted attempt to talk about the luxury of a luxury car that handled well, but it was just a page within the catalog you already had to be in a showroom to read, not something that brought the fight to conquests. The European luxury car makes eventually began to exploit this, but Chrysler could have done it a decade earlier. The point about separate showrooms & special treatment is solid, (also stolen from any solid analysis) but that discipline should have been there in the 1950s. By the time the brand started cooling-off in the 60s, it was hard to enforce upon thousands of independent businessmen. It survived as long as it did because of a few loyalists that valued the driving experience over the dealer experience.

But now I digress from the broader topic... This is a pretty large snapshot of negativity, lots of things out of context, lots of opinion, and some stuff that is just BS.

I could talk about more than just Adam, because there are a LOT of others that follow the exact same model (Ed's auto reviews, Regular Car Reviews, Hoovie, Doug, etc.). Now we have AI bots scanning all these pages and creating "facts", and I could provide some interesting examples of that as well, but I can't add any more scree shots and I don't know if anyone will even care about the topic.

After Youtuber, Lou Costabile of "My Car Story" did the video on my 71 New Yorker, soon after there was another Youtuber named "Auto Evolution" that stole all of Lou's pics and videos and posted them to their site with a no-so-accurate write up to their YouTube page.
When I called Lou to let him know someone else was using his material, he already knew about it and said there isn't much he could do about it, and that the other Youtuber has taken his material on several occasions to use on that site wilthout his knowledge until after the fact.
"Auto Evolution" isn't doing any of the leg work and makes a living off other people's hard work, who have spent the time to create these videos.
Clicks for cash Tubers like "Auto Evolution" are lower than the rage baiter tubers.
 
I’ve never been a watcher of these videos or any videos for that matter that aren’t directly helping me do something I might not have done before. I don’t appreciate my time being wasted and that’s all most of these vidoits do with their regurgitated info.
 
The replies are making me feel better... Good therapy.

Some of this came to me a few nights ago when I got together with some electronics-hobby friends. (We go to a restaurant between Christmas and NYE and talk about our "finds" or our "fixes".) But I'm sure you wouldn't be surprised to hear that most all of these guys also like cars.

One of the guys starts talking about his desire for a Corvair, which leads to talking about "unfair" raps that cars get. So another one pipes up about how many Vegas he owned, and how many years/miles he squeezed out of them. Now a Vega isn't really a car I'd want, but I don't walk around hating them. The consensus was 1) The radiator needed more capacity. 2) Needed a coolant overflow tank. 3) Do not allow them to overheat.

I somehow found that analytical discussion so much more interesting than "TheY r aLL piEces uh $#*t!" Which triggered my memories of the Mopar A-604 ultradrive, which did have some very early issues, but was also some very new tech at the time. I mentioned how many of these so-called "rebuilds" were actually dishonest techs changing an external, easily serviced solenoid pack because both a total internal failure OR a minor issue would put the car in limp-in second gear.

Which prompted a third guy to talk about owning one of those minivans, taking it to a shop and telling the owner "How much will it cost for a rebuild?" then being floored when the shop owner said "Do you have $250 and two hours?" (Solenoid pack.) He was totally prepared for a $2500 bill and days without a car. Basically confirming something I'd long known... Then of course how many additional 2nd failures came after the dishonest shops topped-off with cheapo Dextron II rather then the more expensive ATF+4. He even made a point to show me the van he'd driven to dinner... Not the same one, but his next one that he bought new and ran to 259k with nothing but tires/oil/etc.

And after 20 years of Michigan salt, this thing really should not have been on the road, lol.

Anyways, it just makes me realize that I don't have the urge to "bash". I'm pretty strongly a Mopar guy but I like everything from brass-era to C8 vettes. I think there's a definite niche for electric cars, so I don't hate them. Only the mandates cause resentment. I can document that the Japanese government is extremely protectionist, but I'll definitely burn calories looking at a Toyota Century if one shows up at a car show.

There are probably YouTubers who have an attitude more like mine, but the algorithms just don't favor them. Or perhaps negative human attitudes create the algorithms.
 
A lot of the YouTube videos seem to be AI generated, or at least AI narrated. It seems to have gotten worse too.

I try stick to a few channels that I know aren't AI. I like history, and tie that interest with automotive history and YouTube has been a great source of that entertainment for me.
 
Hate to say it but it's not like most of the YouTube car channels PRIOR to AI were all that great.
For one thing, 80 percent of the car video people shoot their cars (which are HORIZONTAL) in VERTICAL video, and
to compensate they swing the stupid phone cam around like they're putting out a fire with a hose.

"If ONLY there was a way to capture the entire car!"
(Yeah, try turning the camera to widescreen/landscape mode, Einstein)

And then there's the ones who can't seem to hold a camera steady, or in focus, or instead of hearing the engine, they
decide that some heavy metal or sappy pop song is just what car guys want to hear.

And then there's the race car guys who somehow manage to lose focus or swing the camera to the ground JUST
AS the car crosses the line so you never see the ET and top speed, or they can't be bothered to use a camera
with better than 144p resolution so it's sub-VHS quality...they figure their 1999 Nokia phone cam is still good enough.

So...it's not like most of these car pages and channels were all that great before.
I feel very lucky when I encounter a car page or channel where the owner takes the time and trouble to
actually USE media the right way.

Actually YouTube is pretty good about doing DMCA takedowns if the channel owner takes the time to report the video.
Sometimes you can even cause the ripoff artist to lose their channel.
My main vocation for forty years was shooting and editing MTV music videos...A LOT of them, and promoting and selling some of them that I owned the rights to.
And any time I filed a copyright infringement report to YT it was only a matter of a few days before I would get an email informing me that the other guy's video had been taken down.

One morning I got an angry email from 'Ronny Wellner' in Germany who "warned me he was friends with Trump" so I'd better watch out!
He put up two more of my videos and then suddenly POOF! his entire channel was gone!
Yes, I posted his name, for a reason, he seems interested in more than just rock videos. He has a new channel now and he's very active.
He just doesn't harass me or use my stuff anymore.

He may very well decide he is interested in your car videos someday.
Forewarned is forearmed.
