Again? I haven't seen any indications by local dealers (Savannah, Bluffton, and Beaufort) that they are trying to unload their inventory.

Earlier this fall, word arose that Fiat Chrysler had resurrected a practice from the bad old days of the company — a sales bank of unallocated vehicles churned out by over-productive factories and pushed on dealers with little use for them. The company claimed otherwise, saying that its new “predictive analytics” system was simply in the process of being refined to better guide the flow of certain models and configurations to dealers.

With 2019 nearly at an end, unordered inventory is once again on the rise, Bloomberg reports. And not by any small amount, either. In response, FCA is reportedly pulling out all the stops to get these vehicles into consumers’ hands before 2020.

The initial sales bank report claimed FCA had 40,000 unassigned vehicles in the U.S., which the automaker claimed it whittled down to 5,000. The analytics system was working, it claimed, bringing total inventory down by 140,000 vehicles in the third quarter.

However, that pool of unordered vehicles swelled to roughly 70,000 at the beginning of December, a source told Bloomberg, and internal marketing documents reveal the automaker is prepared to play Let’s Make a Deal to clear them out.

The company says the build-up is the result of a year-old system to streamline manufacturing by using data analytics to forecast demand, which can cause supply to wax and wane. But it’s also leading to internal strains, with some employees expressing frustration that the cars produced don’t match market preferences, according to the conference call and people with knowledge of the matter.

The magnitude of discounts Fiat Chrysler is resorting to in order to coax dealers to take on the vehicles sends a troubling signal for the automaker’s most important region. Spending on incentives impinges on earnings, and the company is almost entirely reliant on the money it’s making in North America. The situation also shows the challenges automakers face when adopting new technology to overhaul entrenched practices.

While the unordered vehicle pool has shrunk markedly since the start of the month, there’s little time left to clear the remaining pile before the end of the month. An internal marketing email from November showed FCA’s willingness to pursue employee pricing to move metal, as well as targeted incentives for certain models. A December 11th conference call with sales staff painted a picture of a company with the sales pedal to the floor; it showed an all-hands-on-deck situation, and many dealers expressed frustration with the idea of taking on inventory they didn’t want.

In some cases, it’s not that the model isn’t popular — just the configuration. One dealer was heard on the call complaining about the number of unassigned Ram HD Big Horn models with optional 20-inch wheels, a sales exec told Bloomberg. The dealer’s customers preferred stock 18-inchers.

In a bid to lower its bloated inventory, FCA reportedly put a limit on dealer orders this month. If you’ve got spare time over the holidays, and you’re in the market, you might check to see if FCA’s desperation can benefit your personal fortunes.

They don’t teach any history in h.s. or college anymore.
When I was a kid a 100 day supply in the sales bank was good news to me and meant Dad was turning in his company cars every 3 months. Didn’t matter what he got because he would grab a car out of the bank that he wouldn't usually order. Like in 69 he had at least 3 C body 2drs and 4 loaded 4drs.
 
At least they stopped trying to force sell those ugly little Fiat cars.

wife and I almost went to the local Dodge dealership yesterday. She is in favor of a Challenger with AWD.

Should be getting a response from them looking to move a turd like that.

My local Dodge dealer Cook has a bunch of them with 6 and 8 speed automatics.

$47k with a Cummins. $34k with a Hemi.

Sorry, no manuals......
 
A lot of Hellcats out there I hear. I would assume they'll extend the Power Dollar promo into January.

If I ever would be a salesman....it would be selling Mopar's.

My local Dodge dealer is within eyesight of a major military installation so they sell A LOT of high end Ram's and hot rod Dodge's to military and government personnel. Most people get reassigned somewhere else before the warranty expires so a lot of new cars and Ram's leave this area. This dealer has a high turnaround on a huge number of very desirable vehicles. And they have a very limited amount of used cars. This dealer is a goldmine just because of location.
 
Hmm...seems like their sales software doesn't work very well if they get a glut of unsold cars, then sell a bunch and in the same quarter go right back to a glut.

Whatever happened to ordering a vehicle the way you want it and then it would be built?

If I could do that I could get a forever truck, that they do not make. Just like always I will have to build it myself out of lots of cast off. Except for my wife's vehicle it's the way I have always done it, of course I have not had to commute to work in 20+ years
 
The one big drawback, at least to me, is a lack of color choice on dealer lots around here.
This was the only out of more than 30 R/Ts on my dealer lot not black or silver.

Yep. Same here. Most are Pitch Black or White Knuckle. The only reason I bought my Scat Pack is because it was an R/T Scat Pack Plus which meant it had all of the Hellcat stuff on it and didn't have all of that reactive safety crap on it like my 300C. I hated that lane intrusion and reactive braking stuff. I asked the sales manager at Cook Dodge why the same colors on the lot all the time and he said that those colors is what sells on impulse. He said if a customer really wanted a specific color that most of the time they are willing to wait for the car to be ordered.
 
You guys have no idea how bad it has become. FCA is holding a gun to the Dealers heads to take this unwanted crap inventory and is withholding marketing funds if you don’t. They are strongarming the Dealers and it’s getting ridiculous. Dealers up here are close to packing it in in some locations as they are sick and tired of the way FCA operates. We are loaded with 180 days plus of inventory and they want us to take another 90 days worth!! :BangHead::BangHead::BangHead:
 
Seems like the Italian way of doing things. Build too many, force them on the dealers and then bring out the new models. They can't sell either one.
