Howdy, I got my first classic car about three weeks ago. Its a 67 Sport Fury with the 383 4 barrel. I've had it in the shop for most of the time. New gas tank, fuel sending unit, fuel pump, distributor, fuel lines, brake system completely redone (still drum), some electrical work, Edelbrock Intake manifold and carb. It runs fantastic now, except its hard to start after it's been running for a while. Great on cold starts though.

List of still needs to be redone/upgraded:
Radiator and Heater (not overheating though)
MSD ignition
headers
Vinyl top
all new interior
body work

Anyway, I like it a lot. I'll probably be asking y'all for repair advise in the near future. Thanks.

Yes, it cranks just fine. Just takes it a while to start again after its hot. Cold starts in less than 2 seconds. I think the gas is getting too hot. Couldn't fit a spacer between carb and intake due to the passing spring would be at a bad angle.

How is the fuel line routed from the pump to carb? Welcome and nice car!

From the fuel pump, to an inline fuel filter, then, its wrapped in some heat shield, goes right over the engine and into the carb.

Nice car, welcome to the site from the Motor City!
what kind of carb?

Nine times out of ten when it slow cranks when the engine is hot everybody automatically blames the fuel system when you really need a new starter. Trust me.
And welcome. I love Fast tops!!

I've had the same issues in the past on both 383 and 440 cars. I put a spacer on my current motor (383) and that almost totally did away with the hot start issues. Only on the hottest of hottest days, and when I had been driving for a good distance, did I notice any difference in how long I had to crank it. Also switched to a high torque mini-starter. That helped alot too.

I hate to highjack the new guy thread, but he might as well get used to it on this site. Thanks for the comment on the starter, I have a feeling mine is the original starter and it is cranking slow after a couple of short stops. When I buy a new starter should I just stick with the original starter or is there a better option out there?

I would go with a mini-starter. More cranking power and a lot smaller and easier to install. You can get one from AAP, AZ, NAPA if you want a new one or get from a junkyard.

Thanks Bob I was wondering if that might be an option. I went that way when I changed my MGB's starter a couple of years ago.

hell ya nice ride. when the motor is warmed up, turn it off and remove the air cleaner. then pull the throttle cable. do you get a good squirt of gas into the carb throats?

Nice ride. Only thing I would do is get rid of the glass fuel filter. Not that I care about originality as some are, it's more of a safety thing. God.. Bob I don't believe i posted that.
