I have a Group 27 680 CCA battery...it starts my 383 up just fine. Although it doesn't get to 0°F here.

Ultimately I just gave my old battery a really good deep charge, a quick 12a charge to wake it up and then a long 2a trickle charge over the course of a weekend and now it's firing up just fine. But I noticed that my neighbor's battery charger boost pack thingamajig did not start it, even on the booster setting, thus my impression was that it needed a fair amount of amperage beyond what traditional hardware store equipment provides.

FWIW, we use a Walmart Group 27 battery which when bought was made by Johnson. It died a little early a year ago, so we got a warranty replacement free, which is an Exide job. I like how Exide includes a little indicator telling folk whether the thing can be salvaged or not. Anyway, Wallyworld warrants these, so we get an 800 CCA battery for at least 36 months, for $130. This beats even Costco's Interstate offering by a few $$.

My public school pre-common core math skillz says that's $10 cheaper, but I'm wondering if your prices are different because of location.
I looked at Wally World price for a Group 27 and it's $149.84 at the local store. although that's an online price.

I too use the Walmart battery, no issues, they usually have them right on the shelf. Last year, I originally did a search for the Costco Interstate group 27 based on comments on the forum. Website said 5 in stock so I headed down to my local Costco and after an exhaustive search, I was told that they didn't have any in stock. Assuming the website was not updated for that location, he searched and said another store had them. I headed over, only to be met by laughter. They hadn't had Group 27 batteries in stock for years and Interstate stopped making them. I think at the time I even went directly to the Interstate website, but all links led to Costco. Moral of the story is Bird in Hand is worth two in the bush (or listed on the website). I'd be curious if anyone has actually purchased one from Costco recently.

The battery warranties have been dwindling. I just bought a new battery from COSTCO for Mrs. SIPLOWGUY's Jeep. The warranty is only 36 months and is prorated after the first month.
I bought a group 27 at Walmart for the '70 a couple years ago when Costco didn't have one. I had asked at Costco and they said they had not been able to get group 27. I was told they could try to order one, but in the next breath, they said it will probably never come in.
I needed one for the '65 and was in Costco last summer... I looked over their battery rack just for laughs and there was some on the bottom. The guy at the counter was surprised to see them in stock.

I miss the DieHard batteries with the long warranties that used to be available at Sears. I had one that lasted 10 years once.
Now I usually go to NAPA, because the glue on the brand stickers that they use seems to prolong the battery life.

My neighbor two houses ago in Kalifornia had a JC Penney lifetime battery in his 65 Mustang. Penney’s sold the warranties to Firestone. I think he had that battery replaced three times when I knew him…

Thx 4 the update Uncle John! Glad the Babushka talked me into re-upping out Costco membership. I bought our Wally battery 3 yrs to the month ago now. The BEST battery we run is the 5 yr old Group 24 in our '83 Dodge D150. Its a bottom shelf cheapo-2-sell-the-vehicle sort from VatoZone, but damned if it hasn't weathered well here! It's a Johnson Control make....
IMHO, at that price point, lead-acid car batteries are pretty much just lead-acid car batteries. It's lead plates and acid in a plastic box.
I've had some batteries last 10 years, like the battery in my '70 300, and I've had them last 3 years, like the dual batteries in my Ford Excursion did. I think it's a matter of how they are used and/or abused more than anything.
If you think about it, what can be different from battery to battery? I'm referring to "traditional" car batteries here.... In fact, I was once told (by someone knowledgeable about such things) that the difference between 3, 4, and 5 year batteries was just the warranty and the 5 year batteries cost more because they pro-rate the age differently. It's been my experience that like tires, by the time they pro-rate the age, then factor in the list price (not the sale price) that the warranty is pretty worthless after the first year or so. In other words, you can buy a new battery off the shelf for the same or less than getting the pro-rated battery replacement.
Long story short, that's why I price shop.
