I can't believe it. I just got a call from Citibank concerning my credit card asking me if I used it today. Someone was trying to make several hotel reservations with my number. This is the second time in 7 months this has happened. The thing is this card is never out of my wallet since it is not used to purchase goods where I give the card to a sales clerk. This is my online car parts card and only car parts card like Summit, Rock Auto and Ford Parts Guy. At least my spending is noted by Citibank and that it is only auto parts. Last used by me for Rock Auto on the 3rd for 8.95 and the customer service rep noted it. Have no idea how this is happening.

If it has a RFID chip all they need to do is get close, not friendly, just close.

yeah its crazy how easy it is to get that kind of info. Do you have websites remember passwords or use autofill? That info can be hacked easily also, even when you're not online. But you've already got your bank watching your *** so that's the important thing, right?

I have had the same problem with Mastercard. One of the hackers was called Justgive, if you can believe that. I barely use it, and have been hacked 3 times over several years. I was never out a cent, however I gave up on that card. I won't carry any debit card as well.

Three times in two years and as recently as last week for my wife, her second in two years.
5x in two years. WTF.
More and more online merchants are accepting PayPal which I use at every opportunity.

Been lucky with my card. Never had anything like that happen (yet)... Did have one incident years ago on ebay. Bought a car, and after purchasing, the computer went haywire. After taking it in, they said someone tried to hack the computer, and access my paypal account/something of that nature.. Luckily they never did.

Citibank was also asking me if I knew of a charge to CCS WAUSAU. Had no idea so I went online and saw they are a skateboard outfit in Wisconsin. Well skateboards is definitely outside my established profile but not those who steal credit cards. I actually called them and asked if they sent anything out totaling $267.00 as they were going to lose the money. After verifying who I was, and an account in my name, the goods was being mailed to Tennessee pending CC verification. The order was cancelled and the w security rep told me they try to verify all CC sales for their products. I said no wonder considering. Nonetheless, she was happy and gave me everything for a police report if I cared or Citibank did.

In one of the fiascos I had to clean up after, I learned of what the thieves are doing when they grab a CC number.

Verification codes are only a measly three digits.
Spaced out over a period of time so as to not raise a flag with the bank, they make $1.00 purchses online (to something like Skype) where there is only automated interaction, starting with 001 and and going up to 999 if they have to until they nail the correct verification number. Once they have the correct verification number, they go to town.

Actually, thieves grab as many CC #'s as they can, and sell the lists on the Deep Web.
Hackers buy the lists and using using Robo-purchases that find valid CC3's the correct Verification code within nanoseconds.
Then those hackers make up lists of good #'s and sell those on the Deep Web...

I can go buy one right now.

Just trying to make a living, ya know........

Heartbleed

Son there is talk about the Heartbleed virus/defect. Since my number has been compromised twice in 7 months I found a site that checks on whether a site you are using is safe or unsafe. They use terms like "likely" vulnerable, and "possible", as compared to a flat out "no" if safe. So two CC sites were safe, banking couldn't be accessed to be sure, Rockauto and Summit both had issues and I use them a lot.

Yahoo now safe. Google not safe. B of A safe. Citibank safe. Amazon probably safe. Chase possibly unsafe and so forth.

My wife's Chase debit card got hacked yesterday. First time that's happened to us.

ya its rampant. one of my cards got hit last week or the week before,, from france. the cc company saw it and denied it, and stopped my card.

do not use a debit card! you will get cleaned out.

if you shopped at t@rget, it could be from that, or any other recent breach. this heartbleed hack ^^ has alot of attention also right now.

And you know something. The banks don't give a damn. The illegitimate charges on your card that the banks reimburse you for is simply charged back to the merchant.
It's going to get worse if not becoming a way of life.
There's a gas station here where HUNDREDS of people in Sebring got phished from.
Bank wouldn't do anything about it.
The cops wouldn't do anything about it.
The Dept. of Weights and Measures wouldn't do anything about it.
Habib, the owner, just smiles and says "Oh so sorry. Would you like to buy any lottery tickets?"
