If the pits aren't too deep, high build primer will fill them and sand smooth.

Huge improvement! Bet it feels nice to see paint on the roof instead of rust.

It does....it will feel much better when the black and lace are done. The primer filled most of the pits...some glazing putty was needed in a few spots where the roof was leaded on to smooth that out, otherwise it wasn't nearly as bad as it looked originally. Funny that the primer is almost the same color as the original paint.
