You haven't done anything wrong. If you already have the long rod, run it, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in your application. If you were starting from scratch it might make a difference, but you never would feel it in the seat of your pants. In some sort of competition atmosphere you would tune the rod/stroke ratio for the heads, camshaft and rpm range you are running. With a 451 you are basically running a bigger bore 440. The 440 makes pretty good torque at lower rpm's for an engine with a rod that's "too long".
