Has anyone downloaded the free Windows 10 yet?

I have a laptop with Windows 7 and a Surface Pro 2 with Windows 8.1 and I'm thinking about downloading the free Windows 10.

Any thoughts?

Any Pro's or Con's?

Windows ten is free for now but the automatic updates will only be free for 2 years, then you will be charged for every single update after that. Right now windows 7 and 8 is guaranteed free updates until at least 2020. You should also consider the speed of your computer, is it up to handling an operating system that will take more of your ram capacity to run?

just comments from an IT guy:

at my work - on my corporate machines - no. there are known compatibility issues with stuff we already run.

since we are in the IT dept, we did upgrade some machines for us in the lab.

I got to admit, it looks OK so far as far as the interface. its all funny looking, but its all there - the start menu, the control panel, etc, etc, etc.

I have not tried to run any games, or apps, or stuff, yet. we just D/L d it today.

when you go thru setup - turn all the stuff off. they are wanting to slurp everything.

nothings free. some shenanigans are afoot.

Thanks Saylor. I was in IT 10 years ago for about 10 years. It is difficult to test legacy applications. At my business now, I have a Mac, a Windows XP Pro and a Windows 8.1 64bit machine. They shoulda stopped with the very stable XP but no, that wouldn't do. Now, someone hands me a tablet running android and says it can receive a text message and I am totally lost :)

I am running Windows 7 Pro and see no reason to upgrade, period.

If I eventually upgrade to a new system and it has Windows 10 Pro, I may keep it or downgrade to Win 7 Pro.

I have read several articles on Win 10, which is Home only for now.

Non-biased observers say this first cut is basically a beta test and recommend enterprise users wait until at least October, when the first service pak is released.

All said, I wouldnt put a mission critical system on Win 10 yet.

I'm receiving the free Windows 10, but I'm not sure if I'm going to change over. I currently have Windows 7 and I like it. One thing I want to make sure of is that all of my current programs will still work with 10. I was wondering what the truth is also, after having read on one forum that we may be forced to subscribe to Windows 10.

Thanks for the above link.

Oh well, supposedly, we have one year to decide whether or mot to take it, if we want the "free" version.

I'm sticking with 7 Pro until they quit supporting it. And I'm done with so-called "smartphones", regardless of the OS.

Interesting topic. Let start by saying I started playing with analog computers in 1965, migrated to digital around 1970 and have more or less been up to my ears in computers ever since. A few things I've learned the hard way ..

1 - never buy the first version of anything, let other people do the beta testing.
2 - never install software upgrades until they've been well tested by other user's.
3 - if it ain't broke - don't screw with it.
4 - take a grain of salt with all manufacture sales hype.
5 - find a few discussion forums where "working" IT guys discuss their computer problems and solutions.

My notebook, a 32 bit with XP Pro finally crapped out last week thus forcing a total upgrade. I looked at the zillion Win 8 and 8.1 machines, read the forums and discovered my only option was to find a Win 7 machine or buy what ever and upgrade it to Win 10. Since waiting for Win 10 breaks rule #1, I found a "business" class Asus notebook that is factory loaded with Win 7 Pro and offers a free copy of Win 8. The Win 8 discs went to the land fill couple days ago.

I'm happy with my laptop and Win 7. Not so much with my Surface Pro 2 with Win 8.1. I'm probably going to sit back and wait at least 6 months and wait to see what the reviews are on Win 10 before I upgrade anything.

Hell.....my phone is a Samsung S3.......nothing wrong with it and it does everything I want it to do. I can't see wasting $200 on a S6 that pretty much is the same damn phone.

I left my laptop with Windows 7 alone, but put 10 on the 8.1 laptop. I am still learning, but so far I'm liking it better than 8.1. It seems to be a bit more like Windows 7. Time will tell. If I don't like it, I'll load my 8.1 image back on, or do a factory restore back to Windows 8.
