So, my heater box started leaking...badly...

While I clean that up, and figure out how/what I want to rebuild here, does anyone have easy instructions on how to tie off the heater so I can use the car? (It's almost prime convertible season here)

And while I'm at it...anything wrong with *not* fixing the heater box? I never use it, and I understand that's a long complicated job.

Ok, thanks. That did occur to me, but I wanted to see if that was the best way before I tried something. Seems easy enough...

My mind jumps directly to the loop getting tangled in the fan and "a cooling system event".

No there’s nothing wrong with it or it won’t cause any damage. But what MOST likely will happen is you’ll say “I’ll get to it someday” and that someday never happens. There’s cars that have had their heaters disconnected for 3 decades

:-D

At some point, I will need to redo the dash pad, so there's a chance for me...

But in general, not having a heater is not a problem in Austin.

You will only have the rubber hoses inside the heater box if your car has, or had at some point, A/C. If you decide to replace the heater core get a factory service manual to guide you along if you don't already have one. They are worth having for any job you may do on your Fury.

Thank you -- mine is not an AC car.

Do you have a favorite source for FSM? I found a PDF but I don't think it's the right year...

When my heater control valve went on my 72 I gave up trying to find one I just duplicated it with 1/2 copper tube in an H shape with 2 sweat ball valves on the heater box side of the crossover piece so you can isolate the core but still be able to crack it open a bit in the fall if your core doesn’t leak too bad as in my case. Just spray paint it flat black & pull the handles off keeping one in your glove box. I doesn’t look bad. I’m sure some oem Nazis will flip over this but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes & I like the option of opening it up a tiny bit without getting the sweet smelling steam sauna inside.

I removed the nipples form the block and used these to plug;

Where the heater hoses enter the engine? I didn’t know it’s threaded there.

Yep. The nipples the heater hose hooks to should have slots on the top to help unscrew. They can be a real *****. A proper size washer can fit across the slots and leave enough room for water pump pliers to grab, or a closed Crescent wrench.

I just figure on destroying them with vice grips when I take them out. New ones are available for a reasonable price.

They are 3/8 NPT pipe thread, as shown above, if you want to plug the holes.
