I'd be curious to know what kind of gas mileage you guys/gals with stock 440 cruisers get out on the highway, like on multi fill up road trips? Until now I've never had a 440 anything, but once my 300 is ready I'd like to have an idea what I can expect from the old girl. Thanks.

I do and will continue to, mileage isnt an issue when your driving a hobby car

I had a 70 300 ,440 with 3.23 rear,235-15 tires ,got 13ish mpg on the freeway driving on a trip. I thought back then it was pretty good.

Last November we drove jazebelle, (69 300 convertible) on a road trip that covered 1970 miles in 9 days. I filled the tank upon departing and kept a record of every fill up on the trip. I checked my speedo against mile markers along a 80 mile streach of road and found it to be about .02% fast..... or pretty close to dead on.
Total trip mileage upon return was 15 MPG.
My engine is the original and had 102K on it when we left. The only modification is an Eldelbrock 750 carb. Rear gear is a 2:92 open.
Two weeks ago we took a 800 mile round trip with about the same results.
I avoid the interstates when ever possible so average cruising speed is usually 60/65 MPH.

Me, I walk interstate I-94 between AnnArbor and Jackson, Mi. all winter collecting beer canz for the dime deposits so I can do one trip to Carlisle for less then a grand. At 10 MPG and a thousand miles round trip you do the math. I swapped out the 323 for a 276 which I'm not really that happy with just to get me up to the 10MPG 'cuz I've got 4 of the 8 bbls suckin' on those cross rams all the time! A 'round trip to Woodward is $100 bill, whimper whimper, Jer

No info.....No picture..... So I assume you have an original cross ram car.....?

I'm trying SO HARD to feel sorry.........:poke:

That's in the ballpark to what I was guessing. My dad had a sweet 65 Sport Fury with a 383 when I was a kid, and I THOUGHT he said something like 13-14 mpg with it. I just remember on our camping trips he filled up several times. Lol. I loved that car, as I got older and he taught me how to wash & wax, and change the oil and general upkeep and such, I just KNEW he was going to give it to me on my 16th B'day, even let me take my drivers test in it......then he sold it for $400 to a 17 year old girl...........who proceeded to destroy it! This was a beautiful car, burgundy with a black top, bucket seats and console shift, and the last time I saw it before I left for the Army it had a badly broken windshield, the whole right side beat in and smoked like a chimney. Took me a LOOOONG time to forgive dad for doing that. Lol.

Back and forth locally: 6.5 mpg.
Took one long trip at a steady 65 mph round trip and I still didn't break 10.

my 71 newyorker 16mpg on the old 440 stock even the carb rebuild cause it used a little oil 10mpg and my driver in the summer 73 newport 400 Eldelbrock 750 carb and intake 13mpg replaced with a 440 cause oil pump lock up nylon teeth time chain i get 12mpg with that 30 over 44o all cars have 276 gears

I use the 68 T/C wagon for family vacations almost every year....usually close to 2000 miles. You can't put a price on the "cool" factor. My 440 is a 71 vintage with probably 90K + miles on the tired bottom end. New heads, new stock grind cam and lifters and a 73 440 spread bore intake so i can run my favorite carb...a Thermoquad. Bone stock 727 auto, 3.23's with 225/75/15 tires. I live, and vacation, in the high mountains of BC and see about 14+ MPG with a wagon loaded with gear, and 4 people. Figure I'm tipping the scales just over 5,000lbs.

My daughters have stated that they would be embarrassed to vacation in a "regular" car.....:)

I gotta say, that is just plain cool, and impressive. So why is the TQ your fav carb? you think those small primarys are the reason for the good gas mileage? Got some pix of your ride? Didn't find any in your album.

Yes the small primaries make a big difference in fuel economy. But the TQ is great carb, it can be adjusted and fine tuned so many different ways. The new Street Demon carb by Barry Grant is just a modern interpretation of the old TQ. The reason most people don't like TQ's is that it does take a lot to set them up, but once done properly your car will start, and run, like it has throttle body injection...at least in my opinion.

Here are a few pics of my wagon...

Loaded up and already driven 3+ hours....stopped for lunch.

Another pit stop...me and my daughters....pic is a couple years old now.

And up at a cabin. We had to drive over and hour on dirt roads to get there...

And interior pic....

And an old motor pic...

I really need to take some new updated pics.

That is one bad *** wagon. 68 T&C is by far my favorite wagon.

Thank god the girls look like their mom. ;)

Yes it does have the authentic vintage attributes. Good job!
