I don't think this subject has come up. Unfortunately the texture of the outboard part of the headlight buckets was accomplished with a sticker. They didn't hold up. Anyone know or has anyone seen a good way to get that area back to the original look?

Sticker? Several years ago, there was mention of taking a hi-res photo (in this case, a 1920s speedometer), then Photoshopping it to get the colors and such correct, then saving that file and getting the final size correct, then printing a "water slide decal" of the file for placement on the instrument face. Apparently this photo-based operation is what many gauge restorers use?

With that hi-res photo file, you might check with some of the places that do vehicle wraps, to see if they can print your file and fit it to the car? Or they can do the whole deal themselves? Perhaps they have some media sizes more inline with what you need rather than a 4x8' sheet?

It would have been hard for them to have a reliable stencil to do painting on in that compound-curved area, I suspect.

Used grills and head lamp bezels for your car are fairly common. Suggest you shop eBay and this site for some nice used ones that still have the applique's in place (they are actually metal, not decals).

Isn't it just Argent paint with a black stripe?

I just stole this picture from BobK's garage.

PPG paints used a suede toner to give colors that texture. I've used it often and it works great. Problem is it is a lacquer based toner. Therefore very hard to find. I'm almost out of it and am not sure what I'll use after I run out.

What about using Organisol for the black? A little satin, a little texture . . . maybe? Just have to prep it so it'll stick.

I need to go through the same type of detailing on my 68. They are a small tin/ Aluminum sheet that has been run through some stamping die to form the ridges. Then it is painted trim black. It at least seems to be a satin black. I had to use a heat gun to pull it off the grill surround before I took it to get chromed. I have a few months to get some of the rock dings out and practice detailing with my spares.

Thank you both, on '71 Fury's that texture outboard of the headlights absolutely is stickers, I did not realize they were metal. Do you know that to be a fact? The eBay grills for sale, most say "stickers missing," or "3 of 4 decals missing," etc. in the description. In photos they do look like metal (that was the goal I assume.)

The '71 Furys you see mostly are like mine, I just polished the aluminum, and I can paint the black outline, but it would be cool to have the grill texture the way it came off the assembly line, if anyone has seen or heard of how it can be done. On BobK's Fury there originally was something there but it is missing on his too. I would prefer not to spend $175 for some headlight surrounds off eBay in nice shape only to have those stickers fall off/fade in time.
