The top is black walnut and all the boards are joined with a continuous sliding dovetail the entire 10' length of the table. No mechanical fasteners or adhesives, in fact I had to use a little bar soap to get them slid together and the first couple of boards took upwards of 2 hours each to slide them together. As the sliding mass got heavier with each additional board they went together easier. I then hand plained the top surface for the old world finish, very little sanding, just good sharp cordless/batteryless tools. The 6 legs are solid steel 1 1/2" square bar stock that are hand forged down to less then 3/4" at the bottom. The skirt material was given the same hand forged treatment to show the beauty of the metalsmiths talent with the hammer. The top, legs and skirt were then attached to a steel subframe that I welded up and truly the only mechanical fasteners are holding the top to the subframe. The top was treated to a pure tung oil finish and the steel was hand sealed and burnished with carnuba wax. The sliding dovetail used in this manor will soon be legally trademarked by me.
