Automakers went so far as experimenting attaching bumpers to cars with it with apparently surprisingly good results

Can you imagine if they had gone with that.
You damage your bumper and a quick cruise through a shopping mall parking lot will find you a replacement...

I'm thinking velcro for the NYB. The right front window motor quit again and that damn cardboard is at the end of the road.

I was told (unsubstantiated) that certain year Fords used the same motor that are still available and cheap. I'm too lazy to research it.
