I hit the Holly Grail

Unless he hires a staff, puts in some more phone lines and such, he's better off by himself with a few steady customers/resellers to help pay the bills. PLUS, he probably wants the stuff to go to places it's needed rather than to just make somebody else money.

For an internet-sales salvage yard, try Bud's Salvage in Aline, OK. They ship!

This one, maybe ?

Back in the middle '70s, I was between jobs and was running around with another guy that kind of liked cars. One day, he said we needed to go out to see this old man out west of town. Out where the county road gets narrower the farther you get out of town. We went in my friend's '50 Buick sedan, for good measure. I'd never been that far out on that road, but on the terraced field sat about 100 old vehicles. There were some cars in there that would have been great to rebuild, as they seemed to be mostly all there, but it would have taken EVERYTHING to do them. The '57 Mercury convertible (with all of the top mechanism) would have been neat, but far too far gone for the "paint & upholstery" restorations people did back then. He was friends with other older guys who had smaller operations, but they were all "off the line" from the normal salvage yard communications. They talked among themselves and that was it. A few were well-known enough they didn't have to advertise, like the Cadillac guy.

In some of the older '50s cars and trucks, he had trash in them, to discourage people from stealing from him. As they tended to do for radiators and batteries. He had the place "wired" with lights on a board in his trailer house. IF a hood got raised at night, he's know it. "Kids stealing radiators for the copper, so they can buy beer with the money", he noted.

Later on, each of his buddies passed away and their lots were emptied by their survivors. Some wanted the real estate much more than the cars that were on them. Then he passed away. I suspect the vehicles were crushed. That's all many of them were worth, being in the deep-deteriorated state they were in.

In many cases, those old "treasure fields" have been upstaged by the repro parts industry, but back then, there were no repro parts other than for Corvettes and early T-birds, unless the OEMs sold enough to justify their getting new batches made for the dealers to sell. The repro vendors can better-tolerate the multitude of tire-kickers that are out there. These older yard owners? They value their privacy and won't deal with anybody that doesn't understand that.

Good luck on your relationship, Bob!

I got invited to go into one of two VERY OLD salvage yards. The place is a time capsule. Over 40 acres & over 300 cars. All kinds of cars. I was able to take pics but I had to promise I would not post them on the net. I know, trust me. I hate it too. Here’s what I estimate. 40 Corvairs including 1 van & he said there was a Corvair pick up back in there too. 40-50 Studebakers, 30-40 Hudson’s. 10 plus Packards, 30 Willy’s , Kaiser trucks, maybe 6 C body Furys, early B bodys. 8 or 10 56-60 MOPARS, 10 or so old T bird, Several Edsel, a BUNCH of 55-60 GM cars. A BUNCH OF 60-64 Fords. Metropolitans , A couple of Harmon’s. Dozens of 40’s cars. 2 Javelins, a lot of 70’s Fords. 12 early Hemi engines already pulled. And I didnt see it all. It’s rained so much around here & big pools of standing water all over. Quick sand type conditions. I stepped into a sink hole & quickly went down knee high. He said he might let me in the other yard later. I just wish I could show you guys all the cool cars. Tons of desirable parts. I hope to buy some stuff. A 59 New Yorker with a wedge motor, 62 Mercury convertable, Several early 60’s GM convertable. Old 60’s sports cars, Thames panel van, 40’s & 50’s pick ups everywhere. Impalas, Galaxy’s, Fairlane, Several DeSotos.

Bob: Its really great you found such a treasure trove of old cars and parts. I bet now yer sorry you said anything about it. . .

I hope nobody saw you hit the Grail, the religious types would be upset.
And I hope you put it back the way it was.

Never mind it's just a Holly grail.

OK first off this place is not open to the public. Has not been in decades. The story is the guy had a used car lot. A lot of these are cars he took in on trade. Some are cars he just acquired over the years. I can share this one pic. If you look close you can see the water in the leaves & pine straw. This will eventually dry up. You can see how hard it’s going to be to get cars or parts for that matter out. Yes there was a couple paths big enough for a vehicle but he said they where littered with car parts & not wise to drive through. He has a big fork lift. 40 plus acres of this. There’s several cars in there that have parts I need for my collection. And stuff I’d like to resale. And I just noticed what looks to be a trail camera mounted on that tree. I’m sure there where several in there.
