My luck was that the screwdriver never really fit the screw head, especially on Phillips-head screws, so a little extra hand pressure would round-out the screw head. Or widen the single slot in the screw head. And more removal torque might be needed past that? Where's the penetrating oil?? Any maybe a few taps with a hammer?

A reverse use tid bit. A screwdriver shank can be inserted through a box end wrench and used as added leverage for the wrench.
