Ignition coil placement

Has anyone here used a non-stock set of valve covers? Where do you prefer to re-home the coil? I'm wondering if it would work on the passenger side panel in the engine bay, using a longer spark cable and lengthening the wires.

Any thoughts, opinions, or photos would be appreciated.

I ran MTs on my AAR cuda. I mounted the coil on the firewall. Worked great & out of the way. Longer coil wire for sure LoL!!!

Sorry that was in the 80’s. I don’t have any good under hood pics.

That’s the day I bought it. I brought it over to show it off and my buddy’s mom thought a pic of us all pushing it would be funny. Not funny was we stole her art class film to take these. Even less funny was it was crappy black n white film. Joke was on us!!!

No problem, I went Cal Custom because I'm building a muscle car under the hood, and grandma cruiser on the outside.

I'll look at firewall placement. The previous owner's nephew put an electronic ignition on the firewall but didn't finish hooking it up, so I may just learn how to do that as well

Yep. All my stuff was hanging there too so I figured the more the merrier. I love those curved cal customs. I think they look sharper than the flatter MTs.

Hi Fellas,
Not meaning to Criticize but moving stuff to the Firewall is putting it where all the Heat from the Engine gathers.
Used to work with Electronic Ignition in the early days and found that mounting somewhere on the Inner Guard with reasonable cool air flow
was the Best Place for Longevity.

In Phoenix the only place under the hood that isn’t hot is on top of the hood LoL!!!

The only issue you might get is radio interference. Using a factory coil mount the coil wasn’t up against the wall. There was definitely air flow between it and the mounting surface. Never gave me a lick of problems AND it was never in the way. Ever.

Just stating what worked for me.

We did a similar thing on the 401 in the Gremlin. While mounted on the block the coil was getting too warm; made for very hard restarts. Has worked fine!

I mounted, more like hung, my aftermarket coil on my firewall. Because of it's size there really wasn't anywhere to put it on my engine, not anywhere that I wanted to put it anyway.

Not a Mopar and no trailer queen either, here's an engine pic.

This is an old coil. It says "Made in USA" on it, so you know it's been many years since I installed it. It seems to work quite well up there. I've had no problems with it at all. That said, if I were to mount a newer coil these days, I would mount it upright somewhere so it couldn't leak. My experience with newer aftermarket coils on other vehicles has been oil leakage.

My Mopar 383 is still using the factory coil in the factory location.
