I'm sure I can find it, but I'd rather just know...where is the fuel filter?

First post! I've searched the interwebs, and this site, and I'm familiar with where fuel filters can be, but if anyone knows definitively where the fuel filter is, and can drop the location in here, it would save me some time. I have the regular, 400 cid big block, 4 door, with AC, no mods. I can feel around under the AC stuff, and the fuel pump is down there, but I didn't feel a filter. It may be there, and I'll see it when I get the car up on the jack, but I don't see it yet. I can trace the lines from the pump, but if it's hidden along the underside of the car, I didn't see it yet. So if someone just knows, I'd greatly appreciate the info. Thanks in advance!
 
My thoughts is that it would be off the fuel pump leading to the carb. Should be a pretty easy trace to find.
Another possibility is that someone just did not install one either.

They are usually somewhere on the left side of the water pump area. Follow the line from the carb down to the pump.
 
Might head over to www.mymopar.com and free-download a Chrysler Factory Service Manual. ANY brand of C-body will work for what you are looking for as they are all the same as to where the fuel filter is located and how to change it.

For more confirmation of what it looks like, you can head to www.rockauto.com and look up one in the catalog. There will be a thumbnail picture there, too.

The basic location has always been, on B/RB engines, to the passenger side of the water pump and below the alternator. When the alternators were mounted higher, the filters were easy to see. When the lower-mount alternator came into play (about 1972 or so, with the normal size alternator), they got a bit buried under/behind the alternator. Which was one reason to order the later cars (1975+) with the factory elec-heated back glass and the related 100amp alternator, when possible.

Thanks for all the help. I have about 5 inches of flexible fuel line where I think the filter should be, according to the posted photo, so I’m thinking I don’t have one currently installed. I have some hesitation from a stop, but really haven’t done anything yet, since I just got it. Is there a filter of some sort back at the sending unit?
 
There is a "sock" on the end of the pickup tube, OR is supposed to be if somebody didn't use some air pressure to blow it off of the tube. That sock's purpose is to allegedly keep water from getting to the carburetor, not "fuel filtering" as the engine-area filter is designed to do. There might also be a wire mesh screen in the carburetor fuel inlet, if the carb is an aftermarket unit.

Check the accel pump shot with the engine off. It should be strong and stable from the very start. If not, that can cause the hesitation. Holley 2bbl or ThermoQuad?

Otherwise, check the spark plugs for a good and reasonably clean firing end. With a consistent gap of about .035". Timing should be to spec, too, or about 2.5*BTDC more than spec. If the plug wires are OEM, what is the calendar date code on them?

Does the hesitation happen all of the time? Gentle accel, mild accel, hard accel?

Does the engine have an external EGR valve or the floor jets which pre-dated the EGR valve a year or so. California emissions or federal emissions?

A little update, figured I’d pop the distributor and check points, but it doesn’t have points, so I didn’t mess with whatever that little unit is called. Tested my vacuum advance, and it seems to work. Drove it with it unhooked, and the hesitation seemed to be worse. I then figured I’d loosen the distributor and turn it a little and see what happened. Turned it to the right, clockwise, RPM went up, took it for a test drive, hesitation almost gone. When I went to loosen the distributor hold down, it was barely tight, I actually thought I had too big of a socket on it. So maybe distributor slowly rotated over time. When I get this gas run down, I’m going to pull the fuel sending unit out, just to check.
 
I think it’s possible it’s the accelerator pump, but I don’t know for sure. Gas kind of gurgles out, but not a jet, like I’ve seen in other videos.

How many gurgles before the pump shot dries up? Once it dries up, re-start the car and run it for a few minutes, then shut it off and re-try the accel pump.

For grins, get something like a firm piece of wood and gently insert it in the float bowl vent tube. How much fuel is in the float bowl as the pump gurgles?

Should be NO gurgles, just a solid shot of fuel from the accel pump shooter. Probably at least three full shots.

Will probably need to take the top off the carb and put in a new accel pump.
