Did you get them to sign any car parts?

Although they may have graciously signed things for you I would bet that they did appreciate the fact that you did not ask.
Because of job positions in the past I've had opportunities to hang with motorsport celeb's and the constant "please sign my stuff" thing sometimes gets old.
They perfer to be one of the car guys instead of the focus. By treating them like Matt did will more likely result in future contacts as friends then by putting them on a pedistal.

The guys I got to talk to asked me if I had anything that they could sign, I didn't, but appreciated there offer.
