Some of the stats for the Oasis of the Seas make you say holy crap. Just imagine the logistics of provisioning this thing in an 8-9 hour period, never mind the passengers and all the luggage. To me, the quantity of beer seems a little low for a week with 5-6k passengers.

Ship Stats

  • Gross Registered Tons: 225,282
  • Passengers (Max Occupancy): 6,680; Crew: 2,196
  • Length: 1,187 feet; Width: 208 feet

Curious Facts:

  • The vessel contains 3,300 miles of cables, which is roughly the width of the United States.
  • 110,230 pounds of ice cubes are prepared daily.
  • Central Park features 56 trees and bamboo, 62 vine plants, 12,500 plants.
  • The AquaTheater pool is 18 feet deep and is one of the biggest pools at sea.
  • 4.7 mill pounds of fresh water are used in 24 hours.
  • Oasis of the Seas boasts 7,000 works of commissioned artwork.
  • The ship has 20 chefs, 222 cooks , 102 sanitation/cleaning culinary crew.
  • The breads and pastries are all made fresh onboard. The bakery machine makes 4,000 rolls per hour.
  • Consumption in a week: 18,000 pounds of potatoes; 16,000 pounds of chicken; 15,600 pounds of beef; 62,000 pounds of fresh vegetables; 45,000 pounds of fresh fruit; 86,400 eggs; 10,200 bottles of beer; 3,500 bottles of water; 2,225 bottles of wine; 8,000 gallons of ice cream; 18,000 slices of pizza.

I'm signed up for 3 right now. An 11 day western/southern Caribbean next month, then a 14 day Canada/New England this fall out of Newark, and finally in spring 2017 a 10 day Hawaii /repositioning Honolulu to Vancouver BC.

Never done a cruise myself I think it has something to do with 6000 people in a 200 x 1100 ft area. But should that change I certainly know now who to come to for advice.

Largest I've been has 3000 passengers and another 1700 crew. As you can see in the pictures it isn't busy everywhere. Pick your spot, even on your balcony and it can be quiet. Besides, that dimension you give has to be multiplied by anywhere from 10 to 16 decks. You just have to stay away from the pool at peak times, and don't go to eat at opening time. If I have been to a port a few times, I may not even go ashore, or leave after the excursion rush. I get the whole ship to myself - almost.

Cruises are really nice. I toss my keys and cell phone in the room safe and never touch them until we're ready to leave. From there, my only cares are deciding what to eat for dinner that night.

Crowding really isn't a problem. The ship does this everyday and knows exactly what needs to happen. I've been on 5 cruises so far and with the exception of boarding, the number of people never comes into play.

I don't see us doing one this year. We want to do some other things because I have more time since I retired. Probably next year.

This is #14 coming up. I think my total until now is 102 days. I have a 29 day Buenos Aires around the cape, up the west coast, and through the canal to Fort Lauderdale in my sights for 2018.
