Hi. I'm trying to find out if there is an adapter to be able to continue using my dual snorkel on my new Eddy AVS2. The original hole is 4.25 and the new carb intake is over 5".

i can accept having to buy a modern air cleaner, but it would be great to still use the old one. Up until I tried to put it on the new carb, I had no idea there was a size difference...I was more concerned about fabricating a custom throttle linkage than I was worried about the air cleaner.

What a shock...

Thank you!

Cal Custom, or similar, has them.

In reality, all you really NEED is the BASE from a 1968 model year 4bbl air cleaner. Better yet, the base from a used or repro Chrysler open element air cleaner, like the 1968 Road Runner used. That's what I did back in the earlier 1980s when I put a 9801 TQuad on my '67 Newport 383 (to replace the OEM AFB and intake). I had found a dual snorkel air cleaner at a swap meet before that. So now it's the '68 dual snorkel with the '68 RR air cleaner base, which effectively makes an incognito open element dual snorkel air cleaner. SAME air filter element, too!

Worked for me,

You can use a base from a chrome air cleaner that uses the same diameter air filter element.

I don't see any website for Cal Customs...

This seems to be what you're talking about from Classic Industries... https://www.classicindustries.com/p...SQPpdlbocmX0TMnSiJhoC2GwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Also Dante's as well as Mancini Racing has them.. but no specs on anything. Mopar Unsilenced Air Cleaner , DMPS-4551 Mopar Air Cleaner 1968-1969 A-body and B-body 340/383/440 - dantesparts.com

So I'll have to call and ask to make sure these are the correct size...then go with the more cost effective version since I'm not going to use the top anyway.

The large hole is what I term "Holley size", as the smaller one is "AFB size". Which is also model year specific, post 1967.

Gotcha... I found the base plate "413" posted about that will work on eBay.. It's a base plate designed for the 14 x 3" filter, with a 5 1/8" opening. This will cover what you suggested. Then I can just rest my dual snorkel on the air filter like you said and make it unsilenced, which is perfect.

I bought a WIX 42095 and this from ebay.... Pardon Our Interruption...

Mancini has 4 different base only options for both 13" and 14" filter elements. I'm not sure, but don't you need a 13"?
Air Cleaner Bases
I can't use any of those, they're all low profile. They'll never fit over the fuel, electric choke, linkage.. etc. You can definately use a 14". My dual snorkel is slightly over 17" wide.

got the lower plate today and installed everything. Looks like factory and with plenty of room to spare. Very happy!

Thanks as always for the suggestions!

I bought a '68 imperial air cleaner at a swap meet, it is the Holley size and the base fits perfectly under my factory dual snorkel '66 air cleaner lid.
I tried a 4150 center hung carb and I had to heat up the base to clearance it for the needle and seat, not an issue with a Carter/Edelbrock carb or a side hung Holley.

I should probably give a few more details on this setup as to why I had fitment issues...

I installed a Weiand 8008 intake manifold. I chose this unit because it's a lot cleaner looking than the Eddy intake. It has no valley or recess for the divorced choke element, and on the other side, no extra holes or anything. It's very clean looking to the eyes and has the same performance output as the Eddy. I then went with a new Eddy 1906 AVS2, which combined with the Weiand, put my overall height about 1" to 1.25" above stock. That was an issue with the air cleaner in general. I could close the hood, but the air cleaner was buried in the fiberglass insulation. To solve it, I used a Mr.Gasket 14x2" performance air filter. Combined with smaller 14" base plate, it left me with an unsilenced style which now dropped the overall air cleaner height down slightly below stock height. Which is great. It all looks stock.

Another issue was that the stock throttle bracket was 3 inches too low. So I had to fabricate my own throttle cable bracket out of 2 brackets Mancini Racing sells, as well as replace the spring mount and springs. I wanted to keep the kickdown rod, but the unit they sold was non-adjustable. So I bought the adjustable and combined the two.

So not only was there a problem with the air cleaner size, but the stock rigging was useless as well. A lot of this was totally unanticipated. I had no idea there would be that much height difference between the stock height and the new height..on top of the carb barrel size. But it all worked out.

Also found out my vacuum advance unit was shot, which I replaced with the correct unit from Halifax Hops.

All-in-all, it was some trouble, but it was very worth it. I now have an electric choke, the carb is tuned and runs great...great throttle response and it all looks stock. I had a lot of issues with my Carter AFB, choke, could not get the idle mixture correct, it leaked ..after 2 rebuilds ..I was done. Time to move on.

This is super helpful I just put an AVS2 on my 64 383 and was sunk when the factory air filter didn't fit back on. Just ordered the same base so I can run the factory air cleaner. Thanks for doing the leg work!
Let me know how you make it. It worked perfect for my set up. I have a dual snorkel from a 65 New Yorker with A/C. It's the same size as the single, so it should be fine for you as well. Makes sure you get the same air cleaner....very important.

An Enviable breather setup you got together! I've done decent in some of my junkyarding for breathers, but dual snorkel mid 60s Mopar I've NOT found, and am thus at present forced to use the ugly corporate Edelbrock advertisement to top mine. I currently run a 'Brock 1405, but, when flush w funds and new engine, aspire to either a 1905 or 1911 AVS2, on a Performer intake, for the low end torque band. I did nicely with the kickdown from the 1966 2-bbl setup for this, though I adopted the '68 linkage to more compactly contain return springs.

Hindsight, I think the Edlebrock might have been an easier setup for the kickdown and linkage... but I am really happy with how the Weiand intake looks and performs. It's a cleaner look and nearly identical specs on performance. You can really feel the power in the response now. I went back and forth with both.. and changing it in the first place.. but I am happy. I may not have the stock crab and intake on it anymore, but I have a car that runs really well, and has so much more power in the pedal.

Yeah, a few years ago you could find them on eBay and still pay a fair price for one... but now, any dual snorkel is a king's ransom. I was lucky enough to find mine and restored it. It's not meant to be on my engine... but it looks really cool. I have the original unsilenced, which was a tiny 12" little thing that just looked wrong. I restored that as well... so I can use either one now.

This pic was before I did the carb... so the air cleaner is at stock height.

This is the original unit... before I did a ton of work sorting all kinds of silly things out... like the booster, the inline filter... etc. The dual snorkel is more recent.

A Truly Artful Engine Compartment you have now! I seldom wax over aesthetics, except when so well done as is yours. I see you've stuck with the 22" radiator, as I do too. I thank you for the data on the Weiand intake and the superior performance! Such knowledge is dear to me, as it helps me avoid wasteful expenses. What's the power band with that one? As an urban daddy, I seek optimal torque at low rpms. The 3:23 makes an excellent rear end for city driving, and I like tuning the engine for it.

Again, my thanks to you for sharing a glimpse of really excellent taste and execution on that engine compartment!

Thank you! I don;t have the exact specs on the manifold, but it's nearly identical to the Edlebrock in port sizes and mounting. BUT... I will say, they are ported in a different configuration with the distribution design of the manifold. So your 'plenum' has a totally different look than the Edlebrock. Opinons vary on both, but in the end, I found the Weiand fit the clean look I wanted.

Definitely consider the linkage BEFORE you do anything else. I am not aware of how the Edlebrock handles the stock linkage as the stock throttle cable mount is really low on a 65. I was shocked. The Manifold is the same height as stock, but how the 1906 has it's linkage is a lot higher than the stock Carter AVB. I really had little choice but to do what I did and combine two solid products in order to make 1 really good setup. Yes... it was a pricey option, but it's aligned perfectly with no odd cable angles, and everything is free flowing with no binding or "good enough" design. It's done right.

Also.. look at the return spring setup... I'm not a fan of the single spring.. I get it.. it was designed that way and all that... but it's unsafe as compared to using a dual spring. So consider that as well.

I did HOURS of research and spent even more standing in front of the car after we mounted the carb and realized all of these little challenges just needed to be figured out.

In the end... I'm very happy. She's a whole lot more fun to drive like this...
