While perusing eBay in August, 2003, I found a listing fro a '70 Newport ragtop in Nevada. Seller was claiming it to be a factory 440 car and the bid was stalled at $3,500. car looked good in the pictures, but the seller was clearly wrong about the motor as he had posted the VIN and it had a L in it.
I called him. I talked with him about it fro a long while. He was wondering why he couldn't get a bid higher than what he had, so I told him about the incorrect information concerning the motor. I told him Chrysler people are funny; they will be wondering what else he was lying about? I also told him that as a Newport, he was not going to see 300 money.
So, I asked him what he was hoping to receive? He told me $6,500. I told him I thought that was high for his car, BUT... if he would hold the car until I came up with the money I'd give him his price. After a pause, he agreed.
So, I sent him a small deposit and put my '62 New Yorker up for sale on eBay. That was how I met Steve Hobby when he bought the car in September for 2 grand. It took me two months to come up with the remaining $5,000. However, by borrowing it from a woman in my Church, I drove to Pahrump, Nevada, and drug the car home.
I was right that I paid too much as I had quite a bit of work to do on the car, including brakes cooling, motor mounts, and AC, but, I've had the car for 15 years and 41,000 miles. I drove it last Saturday and will do so again today.
So, Happy Anniversary to me and my Newport!
When I first got it. Notice the missing wheel well trim. You can't tell, but the side-marker lenses were cracked and faded too.
It was also missing the trim on the inside of the grill. Sure glad I found it because today would be difficult!!
Trim pieces and lenses found! First alteration, adding Shelby Cal 500s. Had these for some 12 years.
Here's a good look after I had polished them after some ten years of use.
Current appearance, with AR Torque Thrust Ds, my favorite wheel!! One day I hope to have the car repainted in its original Silver Metallic, and redo the interior. Since we recently paid off our house, perhaps that will start to happen in 2019! Thanks for looking!
