This picture ("Men at Lunch") is hanging on the wall in the Empire State Building as you are heading up to the Observatory Deck elevator. The image has been used in numerous safety seminars that I've attended over the years. I've always wondered if it was a fake picture or not.....it's not a fake. It's real and was shot to sell office space of the new skyscraper. This was shot in 1932 during the height (no pun intended) of the Great Depression on the 69th floor. No safety harnesses, no hard hats, nothing! I'm a ground pounder so you wouldn't of caught me up there then (I wasn't born yet of course) or today even with the proper safety equipment. No way, no how!!! Here's an interesting article about it. Anyone who has been to NYC and viewed the city from atop the Empire State Building can attest to the beautiful view on a clear day. I bet at least one of those guys drove a Mopar.....

Always liked that shot, you ever notice the guy on the far right has a pint in his hand?

Im sure they are all taking a few shots to keep themselves calm. When working up that high your blood pressure rises.

Its amazing, now with OSHA, I cant even get on a construction worksite without peeing in a cup. Most places you have to be tied off in a harness if your going up a 6 ft ladder. The lawyers screwed it up for everyone.

A person can be in deep sh*t just hanging in that harness in only 20 minutes.

One place I go we have to where a harness to get up on an empty flatbed to clear off coil racks what ever. If I fell off at that height you hit the ground before everything tightens ,yes we have tried it. They don't want fined by OSHA so to hell with your actual safety we get to keep our money.

There's a 4' harness available and you're not suppose to use a harness when less than 4' up.

You are to use a retractable harness that wont let you actually fall.

You just scrolled back up, didn't you!!
You know back in the day when I was framing houses as a young buck it was bong tokes at my buddies house on the way to work. Dead of winter, lakefront homes, scraping the ice and snow off the top plates with the framing square as we walked along, 8' down to the deck on one side and 25' down to the ground on the other as we prepare to set trusses. No harnesses....
I pretty much only smoke when I'm on fire these days.

I am so glad they gave me random drug testing. Otherwise, I'd probably be a useless piece of fried turd right now.

I make sure my deck is clean before I pull in there throw straps from ground winch them tight, leave throw rags on down the street if need be

No problem with harness that way.
