And John. . . Let's not forget what the "Cash for Clunkers" program did to destroy so many otherwise good cars and / or the good used parts they provided.

The "cash for clunkers" really annoyed me.

Having been in the situation where a $1000 (often $500) car was my way of getting back and forth to work, seeing the cheaper cars get scrapped really got to me. You have people that can't afford to make car payments for one reason or another and now you take the inexpensive cars off the market... WTF? At least I was at a point where it didn't affect me.

The whole thing is crazy anyway... And this is a broad commentary on some of the discussion here.

So, let's say you want to buy a car... and you really don't want to spend a ton of money on a new car. So... You start looking at cheaper cars, let's just say under $5k. Let's also say you don't have the cash... The cars at that price are higher mileage and several years old. Guess what? The bank doesn't want to finance that older car. The loan percentage rates are higher... To the point of where it suddenly becomes cheaper on a monthly basis to buy a new car!

I've heard this from many people that the $5k cars are a tough sell... The people with that type of cash usually will go for a nicer car because they can afford it. The people that can afford a $5k car don't have the cash.

Then there's the upkeep. I still change my own oil and brakes. Most people can't... and at $500- 1000 brake jobs, suddenly that new car looks more affordable, especially with the 10year/100k mile warranties that you can get with a new Hyundai. You can't swing a cat in any parking lot around here without hitting a Hyundai or a Kia and it's completely understandable.

I had cheap cars. I could also wrench on them and was always had another cheap car either sitting in reserve or in my sights. Not many people can do that now.
 
Cash for Clunkers got people to cash in their $750.00 car towards an 84 month $400.00 note.:realcrazy:

Cash for clunkers also started just after the bankruptcy/bailouts. GM and Chrysler had been down for how many months? Dealers around here had no stock. Guys at work could not find anything our customers produced to trade for and ended up going with Hondas or Toyotas.

I bought a 94 caravan in 98 with 78K on it, paid $10K for it and thought I got taken. I still have it 22+ years later with 169K on it and still runs great! Tell me why I should go buy a new car when I see these in yards with over 275K miles on them?

You shouldn't. Would you feel comfortable allowing your wife go to work in that in all types of weather including heavy snow? Would you feel confident it keeping her safe and not breaking down on the highway? Would you also feel confident that her and the young kids could go about their daily life without incident?
 
Yea, wouldn't mind going again. Been quite a while for that one also. Just have to coordinate a day and time that works for both of us.
 
Love walking old car yards. More and more are going the "tell us what you need and we will get it for you" route, which sucks. May save them a bit on theft, but really cuts down on sales, as I always find things that I had not gone there looking for, and wouldn't been able to tell them to "pull it". Can tell that I am old and a car nut when I still identify the car from the rusted hulks, setting with trees poking through the hood after all these years...

My how time fly's, 'Field Find' wreaked rusted Challengers & already patina Charger doors. My bet in another 10 years we will find Demons & Hellcats with trees growing up through the empty engine bays in the woods. Time will tell...

I was looking through a local old county phone book from the mid 80s.
EVERY city,town,berg had their own local wrecking yard. Some cities had 3 or 4 yards.
Slowly one by one they were all put out business by enviormental,real estate lawyers who wanted the land to repurpose and develop.
China has bought up cheaply are auto recycling yards and used are own environmental laws to shut down competition. Where there used to be over 40 yards county wide,now there are only 4.
Scrap is high right now. 300+ per ton. This is when scrap buyers go to these old yards and offer to crush them out!
China has bought most of Americas recycling industry and we let them?
We can't even recycle cardboard here without a protest from enviormental groups.
Instead we ship everything to China,India,Pakistan etc. They refine it and the pollution floats around the world. In the meantime America has shut its manafactoring for heavy regulation.
Next other countries are buying up our farms and food supplies. Again politicians will just let them!
 
Jayyyyy'Eeeezus, Ya got turn everything political? No recycling here in Florida around my area, talk radio sez China ain't buying it anymore, everything goes into the landfill, too expensive to sort it out, something about bottle caps having to be removed. Idiot'see, very soon next it'll be about landfill's filling up, they talk out of one side of their mouth then the other. neverending...

Yep and our leaders and families are in bed with them. Wasn't always this way.
