......on my '70 300 needs to be re-sealed. The common auto parts store exchanges don't seem to have great reviews. Is there a national rebuilder that's good?

Can I do it myself, or are special tools needed?

There probably is a special tool for that. The poor mans solution is to drill a couple of small holes in the old seal, then install sheet metal screws and pry the seal out using the screw heads. Use a stout wood or plastic drift to install the new seal. A lot of the time, the seals fail because there is excessive wear or end play on the gear shafts, if that is the case you should probably have the gear rebuilt.

If it's the shaft seals, there is probably a "wear groove" in the shaft where the seal lip has been contacting it all of this time. A new seal might work for a while, until it gets some wear on it, but that will depend upon how deep the groove might be. Some replacement seals might compensate for that groove, but no way of knowing if they do or not.

Probably best to get a quality rebuilt exhange unit or send yours in for rebuilding.

Just some thoughts,
