If your garage is well insulated, a 220v electric heater permanently wired and installed might be reasonably economical to heat the space and probably less of a hassle to install than propane with all the permits and code requirements that usually go with anything gas fired.

Propane is a way of life out here Jer, where NG is not available for everyone, and electricity rates are stupidly offensive...
Most NG heaters can be retrofitted to run on propane, and tanks are available in large upright "bottles" known as 300 pounders. You see them and the larger ones everywhere. Designed to stay out doors 365, they can run a small shop heater for a winter no problem. Here it's roughly $350 to fill, max.

If I were in your position, I would only use a 20lb tank topper heater as suggested by @commando1 in an emergency. I have a couple and they work well, but a proper propane furnace with venting is the way to go. Tank toppers and other similar heaters are supposed to be used within open or semi enclosed spaces only.
Get a proper furnace - known as Unit Heaters.
Modine Hot Dawg makes a great shop furnace - number 1 rated, USA made parts IIRC.

Also, Mr Heater makes a great furnace that comes with the NG conversion as a subkit. These are so popular they're even sold by Summit... offshore parts though, so caveat emptor...

keep in mind he's not in canada...down here we have 4 seasons...december, january, february and summer....below freezing some nights, in the 60's by mid day...

I'm glad I started this thread and I'd like to say Thank You to all the CAR-BUDZ who responded and contributed. I guess I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a Mini Split because it covers me 12 months out of the year, not just for the cold ones. I had it both ways in Austin, Texas for the 2nd half of the '90s and my Play Pen down there waz 28' X 85' W/ 4 12' doors and 1 18' door. Moved back to Michigan in the fall of '99 and had to finish a dirt floor on an existing 28'X 34' Poll Barn. That home had Natural Gas and when I waz done with every thing in that building I had Heat, A/C and an 11 K generator plumbed into our home and hooked up to the Natural Gas line and I could play all winter and summer in S/E Michigan and did for 15 years 'til Mama announced in the early fall of '14 that she wanted to be closer to our family. FWI Group. We produced one kid, She has 1 husband and in 24 years they've produced 1 Grand Daughter. We celebrated # 58 Yesterday the '29 of December and knew each other 10 week when we tied the knot over the Holidays in '62. You learn not to fist fight with Your Soul Mate after that length of time, you just say Yes Dear and I did and I waz very happy in Michigan but I'm way happy too as long as I'm where ever She iz. I was heating a garage and out there a lot for one winter and if we didn’t exchange the air or leave the garage door cracked it would result in headaches, even doing that it did so quit using them.
maybe I was doing it wrong.

considered a mini split too...but already owned the heater so just stuck a $600 24000 btu air conditioner through the wall...i'm cheap and a mini split installation was beyond my skills

My skills are limited too Volksworld, But We are both retired and have been since '03 and between retirements and S.S. and the fact that we live a pretty quite life the check book grows ah bit every month. Enviable perhaps maybe, but I got my S.S. Card right after I turned 15 and didn't stop working my butt off 'til I waz 64. And I wouldn't have stopped then but the SOB that I was pulling for at that time decided to stop paying the 8 of us that sat in his day cabs. With the help of the dispatcher it took a month but I finally got all two weeks worth that he owed me. Our Stimulus present from the Donald that we received this past summer will more then cover the cost AND installation of the Mini Split. Stay safe and warm volksworld, Jer
