That is the most beautiful boat I've ever seen!!

That is just gorgeous.

Any idea what it has for power?

My non-denominational engine builder built the 4M2500 Packard V12 for this one.

You are my new hero
I used to be into warbirds a lot back in aus and was even part of teams that did restorations on some of the government museum aircraft. Naturally i just had to have one of my own. ;) The Spitfire was an ex RAAF aircraft that flew in defense of Darwin and flew sorties against the Japanese. I sold it to come to the USA and the buyer asked to remain anonymous as he has a few of these planes and likes to keep it all under wraps.

No you are right, I glossed over the 4m2500 part and focused on seeing the Packard part, yes this engine's design heritage is from the liberty engine, I actually had the opportunity to buy one of these too once but at $8000 for at the time it was too rich for me.

Upon reflection, my reply was harsh. I zeroed in on the "I had one" part and just went off. :eek:ops:

I seem to recall a PT restoration project that was repowered with Allisons but I am unaware of any that were built that way.

The 4M2500 is a pretty cool engine. All the valve train stuff is like jewellery as is the Griffon.

I don't know what the owner paid for the engine but he spent six figures having it overhauled and it ran ONE hour and had a transmission malfunction. Good thing because in the course of sorting that out they found the trans was full of bearing material. (engine and trans share a common sump) When they got the pan off it there were 3 pairs of rods in varying shades of black and blue and 3 burnt crank journals. Another minute and it would have gone boom.

Apparently the guy that was commissioned to do the rebuild subbed it out to someone else and they mixed up some of the freshly re-babbitted and machined rod bearings. I haven't heard if that potential lawsuit has been settled or not.

Kevin.
