The Rod Shop

One of my favorite race teams. Mike Fons here driving the Rod Shop Dodge Challenger Pro Stock car. A lot of lessons learned by the Motown Missille car was applied to this car.

Rapids Cuda

This pic of his Cuda was taken at a track in Georgia in 1972. Yea is fuzzy. Hey it was 1972 technology

Ronnies Hemi Colt

This car was not legal for Pro Stock so it ran in B/A with its Sox & Martin Hemi. Also of very interesting note. Look on the door & you see Mechanic Randy Dorton. Ok he worked for S&M & his duties where to keep Lyles cars running in top form. He later went to work for Nascars Rick Hendrick & became their chief engine builder. He was tragicly killed in the plane crash that also took Ricks brother & son. Several of the S&M employees went with him over to Hendrics Nascar team. This car has been restored & now is in the possesion of a collector.

Look at that car, a big motored go cart. Figuring the length of a Lenco trans that were coming about then the driveshaft is all of 12-18" long. no wonder those cars are so unruly and ended up taking the life of Don Carlton.

Yea I guess they saved money on drive shafts. These Hemi Colts where super dangerous. One wrong wiggle & away you went. I hear the ones running the Nostalgia circuit are much better to drive due largely to the deck lid spoiler

Somebody dedicated an extensive Website to those who are no longer there due to accidents. Don't care too much about some links to the Video footage of the fatal Events themselves but to me most interesting as a good source to shed some light on bios even of the ones that didn't make it in the limelight. Especially the early years had some hair raising constructions as can be seen in many pics.

That is a interesting site. A guy I worked with told me a story of how his dad of the same name died at Cecil County Dragway before he was born, car ran off the end and into a tree. I never bothered to verify the story, no gain for anyone but it always stuck with me because of the timing, his mom was pregnant with him when his dad died. Sure enough he is listed in there with the same details kind of erie.

Don Carlton

Seen here in the red shirt. Driver of the MOPAR Missille Duster. Talking with members of the Rod Shop crew. A team he would drive for later

Tennessee Thunder

Car has been restored. And now is a show piece. I have been told they fired it up at this event & the Hemi was sounding good.

I have pictures of me and Grump during his last year or two on the planet at Cecil County Dragway when he was testing his Pro Stock engines with Dave Connolly before he hit the big time in Pro Stock. The Grump would have Connolly make 2 passes, pull the engine, put another bullet in, 2 passes and pull the engine, as so forth for the entire weekend. I walked up to Grump and asked if I could take a picture....he gawfed and said you got the camera go ahead!

LoL. Connoly used to race Dodges on some sportsman classes. You know he was involved in that "Mattie-box" thing. I hear he was suspended by the NHRA for a year or two over that.
