Ok so I’m removing my A/C on my 69 Newport 383 to clean up my engine and save some weight. I don’t want to buy a water pump pulley and a crank pulley.

I noticed the water pump has an idler pulley to the left of the engine that seems to serve no purpose, and if removed, I could use a shorter belt from the crank pulley to the water pump(outside pulley on crank).

With the idler bracket and pulley gone I can use the 3rd pulley slot inward on the crank that already lines up with the generator to run it.

Does anyone see an issue with this? Basically I’m removing the idler pulley and shortening 2 belts.

How are you going to tighten that belt form the crank to water pump pulley? That's why the idler is there to tighten that belt. A loose belt is not going to work.

When a thread starts out "I don't want to buy" It means they have no clue that this won't work out, we have seen it dozens of times.

Buy the correct non AC brackets and pullies and have zero belt problems in the future.

I got rid of the a/c on my ‘70 300. I bought a two groove crankshaft pulley, single groove alternator pulley, the non a/c water pump and single groove correct water pump pulley. Like Chris Rock said “wanna cheat, can’t cheat “
