i had a chance this weekend to dive into my rough idle problem after the car was warmed up. The cigar trick revealed a few cracked vaccuum lines that I replaced and there was a vaccuum port on the back of the carb that needed a vaccuum plug.

I then checked the timing and it was at 19 degrees advanced (before TDC) at idle (650rpm) in neutral with the dizzy vaccuum advance disconnected. According to the specs in the service manual it should be at 7-8 degrees advanced from TDC. So I retarded the timing to be at the specified 7-8 degrees. I took it for a quick spin and there was no sluggish acceleration or rough idle at stops. Before it seemed as though it was about to die once it was warmed up at every stop light. So hopefully that is what the problem was.

What is the curb idle recommended for a 440/727 ? Is 650 rpm to low? I have found conflicting recommendations and couldn't find anything in the service manual.

Im not sure for 69. Base timing for a standard 440 in my 70 FSM is 5 degrees BTC. Someone else here may have the 69 specs.
