New Yorker 440 Exhaust Questions

On engine masters they've tested some of this and there weren't huge differences in header type. Engine was hotter than a smog big block though

Start with your exhaust from the cat back. If that not enough for you then do a cat delete after your inspection. Your fear of gasket maintenance is what...having to replace them again in 30 years instead of 50?

Just my Sunday morning opinion while waiting for coffee and going to play with my 440 )

Good Evening Everyone,
It has been a while, but my dad and I are back to examining the exhaust problem. We really like the looks of those Hedman midlength headers (Engine Performance & Vehicle Customizing Products From Hedman | Hedman Performance Group), but we still are doing one last search for long tube headers before we make our final decision. Do any of you know any differences between a 74 full size CBody and a 75-77 full size cbody that may limit all these products, as they all seem to only be applicable for 74 and earlier cars? What I do know is that there is some law out there that makes it illegal in some states (not sure about mine) to have headers as a replacement for the manifolds, but are there any fitment or mechanical differences? According to the Hedman site, pre-1975, headers are seen as an OEM style replacement.

We also considered getting the HP Manifolds, but they seem pretty pricey and a bit hard to find, however, I would like to hear your opinion on those. They also seem to have a higher rise that would bring more heat to the engine bay, which was one of our goals to eliminate when getting headers.

Thanks,

It’s your car or you can obviously do what you like. But I’m a little curious as to the reasoning behind the header swap. New Yorkers and cars like them aren’t muscle cars and in my opinion are meant to sound like them. I’m just curious as to the direction you’re going with your very nice looking New Yorker.

Good Evening 75landyacht,
That's a good question, the main reason that I would like to do headers is that I thought it would be a cool and rare modification that is not seen on most Formals. Also, my goal is to keep the rest of the car outside the engine bay completely stock, so it has a little bit of a "sleeper" aspect to it. Really all I'm planning to change is the carb and intake as well as getting a new ignition system, but I am planning on waiting until I get to Carlisle to ask some people (and meet some of you guys) and get some more opinions on my plans. However, nothing I plan on doing will not be reversible (no fabrication or cutting) and I keep every part that I have taken off or replaced in the attic of my garage so I can always bring it back to factory stock if need be. Mainly, the reason that I want to do headers is that I really like the exhaust note it has now with the rusted off muffler and resonator, so I want to get something that would have a similar (slightly loud) exhaust note that is also a reliable, safe exhaust system that still turns heads.
Hope this helps,

Ok, we have a fellow on here has the same car as mine except mine is rough and weathered.

His is built up with a 440 stroker and all the fancy bits, runs a 12.4 quarter mile..when he put headers and full exhaust in replacing his stock manifolds and old pipes his new time was 12.2

For that sleeper rumble you want..go with a set of mid range flowmasters and forget the headers and full system..few hundred bucks instead of a few thousand.

Just to give you an idea of what duels would look like under your formal, here’s a couple of pictures of the duels with 50 series flowmasters I had on my 75 2Dr. No headers, just from the manifolds back.
