I've got an original 1970 440 TNT motor with the numbers '125' on the drivers side v/c meaning, I believe, 440 w/automatic but the passenger side has '118' on it. Does anyone know what that stands for? Thanks
The number is the internal engine assembly code. This number is "the" code specification that the engine assembly production division used as the recipe to build your engine. It should be on your Broadcast Sheet.
The number is important to know. There was a pallet rack with hundreds of engines fully built and assembled to a specific code in the facotry. That production day they were building say, 258 cars with a 440 HP 4BBL, so they went to the engine assembly production division and "pulled" 258 engines that were built to that (125) code specification that day. They assembly date stamp would have been stamped after the engine was built and then marked with build code on the valve covers.
Imagine a shop with racks, and racks of pre-built assembled engines, coded for specific car use. A, B, C, E body etc.
If you know what your looking at, it could be the difference between a $50 dollar set of valve covers and a $500 dollar set of valve covers, etc. The numbers matters to people/professionals who are restoring a car correctly, to those who aren't,.. it doesn't.
Your 300 Convert, is beautiful, well done!
Allan, your CHP car has the correct CHP code.
Best regards,
