Ok I have another stupid question. I have a smell in the 69 Newport that I can't figure out.

The smell reminds me of my great aunts early 70s Plymouth valiant that had a rubber floor.

I removed the rubber mat from the trunk thinking that might be it. The mat looked pristine but fell apart when I removed it. (Need to replace it if anyone knows where to get one).

Just wondered if anyone else had a strong old car smell and where it might be coming from?

that poor car worked 50 years to get that smell.

cokes. baby puke. old lady farts.

dont change a thing. i learned the hard way, when you redo the interior, the 50yr old smell goes away, only to be replaced with chinese formaldehyde.

The smell could be anything. My Mom's car had a strong smell and I found a dead mouse in it.

The thing to do is start cleaning and looking. Vacuum the carpets and pull the back seat out. Look under the front seat etc. Fabreeze the fabrics.

A hot day in the sun with the doors and trunk open may help.

If you have to, there are a couple options. First is setting off a "bomb" or fogger inside the car. My son has done this with cars that he has flipped. Dakota Odor Bomb - Car odor bombs for smoke odor removal, pet odor removal and more for a clean, refreshing scent!

The other is the use of an ozone machine that some good detailers use. They put the machine in the car overnight and it eliminates the smell by generating ozone. A good detailer would have one, but I'm seeing that the price has dropped to under a $100 for many of the machines and it seems to me that it would be a good investment... especially if a detailer charges over $50 for him to do it. Search "ozone generator" on Amazon.

You can buy another mat, but I, like a lot of other guys here, will tell you to do something with carpet instead. The mat holds moisture against the floor.

saylor you took the works out of my mouth ( old ladys fart ) priceless smell like the nursing home smell

Try one of these !!!!!

Maybe it's you.

Kind of like Harbour Freight stores?

I've got my kids convinced that old car scent "...is the smell of style!" A little bit like grandma's house mixed with just enough uncombusted fuel in the exhaust... breathe deep through the nose my friends!

How about one with the top down :).
When are we going to get smellavision?
That's a smell I'd welcome and the wife won't mind riding in the beck seat. OK that's a lie.
Anyway I think the OP might have said there is an odd "stink" instead of a smell??? Some smells are good but a stink is never good. Example:

"Wow, did you catch the way she stinks?"
"Wow, did you catch the way she smells?"

An old trick is keep a bag of apples in the car, I was surprised it does help. Toss as they start to get soft. Also I use Damp Rid, they have a kind that is on a hanger, within a week in the humidity here it is full of water and ready to be exchanged for a fresh one.

Well this works for many things and pet odors / smells in the house carpets is one thing that this seems to work pretty well with getting rid of. Just maybe this would work..

Searching this forum with: SMELL, came to this thread..
I also have a odd smell in the Newport. Sniffing around I came to the conclusion it is the steering wheel !!
Anybody else has this "problem"
Are there any members here who are willing to snif on their steeringwheels

No, seriously, the odd smell is indeed coming from the steeringwheel...

you'll have to remove and disassemble the wheel to clean the mildew out of all of the cracks and crevices.
