One step closer...

Boooooo. That stinks, don’t let it get you down. Look at the progress that’s been made, it won’t be long now before your lathering up with SPF 500 and cruising. Lol.. continued patience my good man, continued patience.

With some creative thinking, the mechanic was able to repair the broken exhaust manifold stud. And now I am happy to report that on March 5, 2018 the 440 in my '68 300 has been reborn! On this particularly brisk morning here in Northern CA (38 degrees F at the shop), she fired right up... WOO HOO!

Some additional work did reveal itself (like reverse not engaging), but this was the big day I'd been waiting for and so I had to share (and please don't hate on that air cleaner...it is temporary).

One step closer!!!

Can't hate the air filter, I have one like it, just a little taller! You'll get a proper unit in time, I'm sure.

why the A/C was deleted?

It was a tough decision, but it never did work and it has “ATC2”. Sounded like it was going to be a major headache to get it working again. And it’s a convertible, even on the hottest days, the top up with the windows down is still good enough for me. But I have kept every part and bolt that came off this now restomod engine. It can always make its way back on if desired.

But in reality, this car is kinda like Goldie Locks... if it’s too hot (or too cold for that matter), I will likely be driving my modern truck. And I have the luck of living in the Sacramento area. We probably have a solid 9 months of ‘top down’ weather.

My 11 year old daughter is super excited about finally get to ride in this car. Parked in the garage about 6 months after she was born to be able to afford all those things that come with having kids. 10 years later and I can finally afford to get this car back on the road. Can’t wait to post some more videos of upcoming road trips this Spring.

AS the title of this thread suggests, this process is about baby steps. I did finally get the car back from the mechanic today! And it is now in the transmission shop to get a rebuild. My hope was to drive it from the mechanic to the transmission shop, but the pedal goes straight to the floor... It is now abundantly clear that after the transmission will be a brake job. But, one step closer!

The transmission shop does not mess around. Sounds like the 300 will be headed to the brake shop as early as next Monday. And epic convertible weather is just around the corner.

One step forward, three steps back.

I finally got the car back on the road a couple of weeks ago...after the transmission was rebuilt...the the brakes redone. It was running, shifting, and stopping great. But then all the electrical problems. Ugh. Started to get that figured out so I thought today is the day to take my 11 year old to school. She’d be the coolest kid in the school being dropped off in this cool 68 300. Got around the corner to the stoplight, then all of a sudden I hear this horrible moaning coming from the engine. Put it in reverse and immediately park in at the curb, cut the engine, and there is coolant ALL OVER the street. Engine was turned off but was making all sorts of angry sounds under the hood.

Towed it back to the mechanic and now I wait for the prognosis. I am so frustrated and disappointed. Not to mention the sadness in my daughters eyes.

How big was the puddle, any amount as to how much was on the ground?

I wouldn’t been able to quantify the amount. But enough to flow over to the curb and start to make its way to the storm drain (I put down some rags to block the flow...lucky fish). I couldn’t find any blown out houses so I think it may have all come out of the overflow at the cap. Looked inside the radiator once it cooled and could easily see all the tops of the tubes, maybe 2-3 inches in from the cap.

I suspect I will hear back from the mechanic today and he will say I need a new radiator. If that is the case, I am open to suggestions. It’s a restomod under the good so I dont need that original look (although it appears Spectra makes a repop).

I also seem to remember reading a thread on here at one point about potential problems with aftermarket cast aluminum water pump housing, which this car now has. If anyone could enlighten me more on that I’d surely appreciate it.

Fingers crossed it is an easier fix than where my mind has wondered to.

So it turns out the fail was at the heater control valve...phew! Got that all fix up and the engine is back online. And now that the car is back, and the weather is getting warm... might as well pile the family in the car and head to Sonic for some milkshakes!

Great times ahead!

Nice ... but get that top down!

What I left out of that last post was up next is tackling the electrical. It’s a mess under the dash. I have isolated an issue of an aftermarket fuse installed on some type of a jumper wire always blowing when I put the top up or down. This fuse is not easy to get to. When that fuse goes, I lose windows, brake lights, and the top. So for now the top stays up and daddy (and the family) stays happy. Like the thread says... one step closer.

Great photo. Your wife took that didn't she? They are expert selfie takers

My wife is definitely the photographer in our family...and she does love a good selfie.

And since Fratzog is so insistent:
