Installed Pertronix ignitor and new coil this morning, and have no start. Was running before the change over. I tried all of the trouble shooting tips from pertronix with no success. I'm getting 12V to the ignitor, but when cranking it drops to 9V. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help in advance.

Do not use the ballast resistor with the flame thrower coil !!!

If you are using a new, but stock replacement coil = you do need to use the BR

Yep, I hard wired my ballast to retain stock appearance under the hood.

I'm using the flame thrower coil. I bypassed the BR still nothing.

I can't tell you how many times I keep seeing people having problems with their Petronix changeovers. They are just junk and waiting to let you down. Some people have OK luck with them but most seem to have never ending problems and end up pulling them off.

What the heck is so bad about points? They are so reliable by comparison and easy to adjust. I don't get it? Maybe no one taught them how to work on points systems?

I went all msd distributor and 6al box. I've never been happier with how my car starts now. I got tired of fighting my old distributor. I didn't have points anymore since my grandfather converted it back in the 80s.

I agree. And you can set the gap with a matchbook cover ( matchbooks are still made, right?).
Unless it's a small block. Damn distributer kissing the firewall. Then I go electronic.

I agree also. I have no trouble at all starting with points and it hasn't let me down yet. As Commando says, match book to set them, and old school, set plugs with a dime. I was toying with the Petronix, but gave that idea up long ago.

As much as I hate to admit it. I had it wired wrong. Should have been straight forward but I managed to make it confusing. :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: Back up and running again. As always...thanks for your help and opinions.
Happy Labor Day.

and yet I have now 5 cars running Pertronix flawlessly with two dating back to the 90's on the original installation. As seen above many times it is simply wired incorrectly.

~You would think with only two wires it would be tough to get it wrong. Thanks for the your input.

I love mine, couldn't be happier with them and never a lick of trouble.

I recently installed an Ignitor along with a Flame Thrower. While the car starts much better and has more get up n go, it has developed a slight miss. I'm going to replace the cap and wires to see if that clears it up. If not, points are going back in.

Why is it that I have seen only one of your 5 cars - the 73 Polara 4 door - you know the rules here!

:poke:

Do you ever drive them?

Then I would need special dispensation, from the powers that be, to post them since they are FORDS. As far as I know the rules pertained to Mopars which is what most all own.

All are driven except three for the last 9 months. Two are blocked in the garage while I have been trying to solve an intake sealing problem on a rebuilt 390 in my F100 in front of them. Come to think of it I believe both the Cougar and Park Lane have been on here once. So if I get the ok I can put them all in one post.

The other two would interest no one since they happen to be, close your eyes, Japanese. The second one to arrive as soon as my friend and I exchange money for the car later this month. Great price. Then next month, my 89 year old father who is not feeling well, is turning over his last car to me a 39,000 mile 2004 Lesabre. So that will make two of his cars that I will own, an earlier one and his last one.

First try to Advance your timing by 5 to 7 degrees - that should help eliminate the skip

i've always taken one of the advance springs off and lube the advance pivots up . the midrange is greatly imroved . i love points. it gives me something to tinker with and improve the per. of. another imp. is to use g.m. 6cly. condenser. they are called red wire because the wire coming out of it is red. they improve starting alot
