PH23 vs PH29

Me too..................but you can,t always get what you wahant...........:)

FYI the Hardtop Coupe outsold the Formal Hardtop Coupe in all years from 1969 through 1972 with the possible exception of 1971. I can't find all production numbers for 1970 or 1971 but what I found for 70 confirm that the hardtop outsold the formal hardtop even without all production numbers accounted for.
Wait... you are right!

But is it just my impression or are there way more formal hardtops (29) than regular hardtops (23) offered today? And if that is the case, what could be the reason? Could it be the 29 cars have a higher survival rate?

When new, the paisley package was neat and upscale. Something different than what anybody else offered back then. Just as the Mod Tops A- and B-body cars in the later '60s.

"Formal" meant "upscale" in the orientations back then. The more-squared-off C-pillars were popularized by the '58 T-bird. A little modified in the '70-'71 T-bird 2-dr hardtops and on the Lincoln Marks.

Just something that happened back then.

I also think that the roofline of the 1965 (and later) top-of-the-line Chevrolet Caprice two-door hardtop had its share in making this styling perceived as being upscale with car buyers.

My 69 Formal . I think for next year I'm going to put the skirts back on it and steelies with the factory full wheel covers. Goes good for the size....440 with edelbrock heads ,six barrel , TTi headers and exhaust with a 3000 stall and 355's. Sixty nine formal production is under 3000.

So....a lot of info in this thread.

So what is more desirable? The 23 or the 29?

Is it just a personal choice?

it is personal choice but on 69-71 models the prices for Sports roof (23) are way higher and they sell higher and faster than the formal concave roof (29).

I thought this thread was about Fram oil filters.
I was looking forward to a good ole' debate on which was better...

All depends on which Fury model, color combination, vinyl top or no.
IMO the Sport Top looked good with or without vinyl and in the bright colors. I like the Formal top in vinyl and the darker or richer colors.
In 69 we had a Black over Bright Red Sport Top and a triple Green Formal with vinyl. Both cars looked great.
