I'm not sure if this is the same view as the 50's pic above. It does show that they kept some tradition with an oversize sign, but the building looks completely different.
Slightly off topic but at the same time, we've talked about architects here a few times. This is William Van Alen and his wife in 1931. Van Alen was the architect for the Chrysler building.
This was at the annual Beaux Arts Ball in New York and other architects also dressed like the buildings they designed.
