Production Number Question

IMG_20130910_194645_072.jpgSome manufacturers were offering power sunroofs by 1969(T-Bird, Mark lll) and even more were by 1971, mostly through American Sunroof Corporation based out of Southern California. I guess you would have to base originality on assembly and parts used i.e. factory switch, placement of switch, etc. Golde was the manufacture of the motor and most assembly parts. In the case of my '70 Eldorado, was able to track this through the Cadillac Historical Society. The car has two SRO 'special request options' that turned out to be the power sunroof and power buckets/console. There was a two week period where the car actually left the assembly line, CHS noted question marks where this occurred on the line, even they were perplexed as installation was rare. The cars were then shipped back to the factory after installation was complete. Still, seems like a lot of work for the $626 they were asking at the time for a hole in the roof, granted a lot of $ in 1970...

That's a most interesting detail info. The founder of ASC, Mr. Prechter was an immigrant from Germany. There he worked for several years for Golde, a German company that very early manufactured sun roofs/folding sun roofs and components for factory or aftermarket installation.
The ASC founder made his first money in the US by selling and instlling Golde sunroofs and maybe folding roofs from door to door to American car owners in the late 50s I guess, where this feature was pretty much unknown there. It seems he used these ties to Golde still in later years after establishing his company.

I thought so too, yes, a Bosch electric roof motor by Golde. I bet there are some stories there! :)

I'm sorry , I didn't intend to start a big conflict with this question . I believe it to be a factory roof . I will get pics
next time I get the chance and post them here .

That at explains a lot... Like why so many of the parts from different manufacturers were the same or very very similar...... Rebuilding my sunroof on my roadrunner, I took many apart from the early seventies over the years....

Heres a picture.

Hey hemihead,
Did you get a chance to get some pics of your buddy's 1971 sunroof 300? I am the one trying to document early power sunroof Mopars to possibly come up with some decent production numbers. Production numbers for early B and E bodies are pretty well sorted out, but info is scarce for Imperials, C-bodies, and later B-bodies. Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott.

You are on the Drydock, Correct?

Nice job on those numbers

Thanks, yes I posted that info over on the Dock. It is a major work in progress. Every car I document helps solidify my theories, and sometimes opens up new questions. I could start a thread with the link here if you guys want me to. I am actually a B-body guy, but I quickly learned that in order to get a handle on these early power sunroof cars, I would have to study up on all lines of cars that they came in. When I get closer to retirement and have purchased the retirement home, I will make sure it has lots of room for Mopars. Once I have more room, I could see a 69 Polara or 70/71 Sport Fury/SF GT in my stable. I am currently restoring a 71 Sebring Plus, and have the 71 sunroof Sebring Plus waiting in the wings - so my true home for now is over at roadrunnernest.com

Just found the threads on the Rallye Red 74 Imperial and the 1977 Metallic Black Cordoba that have sunroofs - a couple more to add to the database!

Scott.

You only track power sunroof cars or crank type as well?

I am tracking both, but most of what I have come across so far are the power sunroofs. Power sunroofs on Chargers for 1969. Chargers and Challengers for 1970. Power sunroof expanded to Plymouth B bodies and C bodies/Imps in 1971 and 1972. Power sunroof expanded to Barracudas in 1972. A-bodies got a canvas topped thingee for 1971-1972. A-bodies went to a hand cranked metal slider in 1973. B-bodies went to a hand crank in 1973. I believe Imperials and C-bodies remained power through 1978. The Cordoba I just documented was a hand crank sunroof.
Scott.
