I got the new wheels & tires installed on the rear. (Different bolt pattern after rear end change) Got the brakes bleed & pedal feels very good. Got the rear bumper installed. I think my new driveshaft is too short. Loud clunk comming from trans area when shifting from park to any gear. Did a couple of dry hops in the yard & it clunks very bad. So I slid back under the truck to check & the u joints are tight but I can move the driveshaft around at the front yoke. NOT GOOD. I was worried about the spline engagement. Only have 2 1/2 inches with the 727 yoke. Another 1 1/2 is not splined. So I have 2 options. I can buy a new 6 inch yoke $85 bucks that's splined all the way down. See pic. Or I can take the driveshaft back to the shop that built it & have him make it the correct length. I hate doing that as that shop is an hour away & that's two trips. And it will take him another week. Leaning hard to just getting the new fully splined yoke. And a new u joint installed. Then I should have a full 5 inches of spline engagement. The tires are 29 inches tall on 8 inch rims. Balanced out with very little weight. That tall tire will be nice with the 3.91 gears.

440+ short bed P/U... how long do you suppose the tires will last?:D

I'm not much on burnouts, but that one sounds like it will smoke them when you look hard at the long, skinny pedal.

Yea & its nose heavy too with that big 440 up front & slant 6 coil springs. Its gonna be a true hot rod.

When you say "I can move it around at the front yoke", clarify what you mean. As I'm sure you're aware, the drive shaft needs to be able move in and out as the rear suspension moves. Hence a slip yoke. If it moves laterally (any direction that is not in line with the shaft) then I would tend to think that the tail stock bushing and seal are worn. That can cause clunks but more likely a rumbling sound.

If your splines are engaged and it hasn't fallen out and you're hearing a clunk under load, I would consider that you shaft may be either too LONG and is bottoming out in the tail stock under load, or the splines on the yoke, are as you say, may not be deep enough.

Edit: I agree with the post below from 68plymouth383 that the diff could be part of the issue. Check the tailstock bushing though...

If your drive shaft is too short, the only clunk you'd hear is when it finally falls out...

The driveshaft is hooked up. I can move it by hand up/down, left right about a quart inch. Seal is new, driveshaft is new, u joint is tight, trans mount is new, engine mounts are new, rear diff is new, clunk is comming from directly below seat. Not at the back. It's not bottoming out as it's 2 inches from the tail shaft. Just easy dry hops in the yard & loud clunk. Hardly a load. Truck moved maybe 2 feet.

put the truck up on jackstands under/on the rearend so the full weight compresses
now check your shaft see if you still have wiggle or bindage.
i agree,i dont like any wiggle at all where you say it is wiggling.

another thought,
you have checked the trans mount and the bolts on the crossmember yes?

Already done all that

Might want to take a dial indicator and check the diameter of the yoke shaft. The shop might have installed a small block yoke. I guessing that you probably have an old C Body big block driveshaft around, check the diameter of that yoke shaft for comparison.

Buy the longer splined yoke, not a bad idea for a truck suspension anyway with the laden/unladen height changes. All 727 have same output diameters/splines except the 4x4 and ball and trunnion the 904 slip yoke will not even start sliding on the 727 mainshaft.

They used my yokes

Ok I called my neighbor & he came over. He's an outstanding mechanic. He laid on the ground while I ran through the gears & goosed the gas. He got up & first thing he said was have you changed the trans mount. So I got on the ground while he did the truck & yep the loud clunk is deffinately comming from the trans tail shaft. Steve said the play in the front yoke was ok. Prefer not to have any but that's not whats making the clunk he said. So I need to double check that crossmember & trans mount. Something is wrong there. Hopefully it's just not tight. He said I could bring it to his shop & put it the lift if I wanted to. So if I can't find anything wrong with the mount I guess that's what I will do

You may want to change out that tail shaft bushing, it shouldn't move as much as you said. It's cheap and easy to do.
