Radio Shack and the DIY'er - RIP

Sorry Graham, I've got to disagree with this just a little.

I loved RS, even though I seldom used them, decades ago... I bought my first multi meter from them mid 1980's... analog, because I didn't really know what I was doing and was following a 1972 FSM working on Mopar electronic ignition. I was a repeat customer for many cars and other little projects. I even thought their stereo equipment was nice, but overpriced for my budget.

Flash forward to 2001... needed a bunch of ceramic resistors to repair some 12v florescent lights. The local store had little to nothing like the old inventory of hobbyist/repair supplies and was full of crappy electronic toys at stupid pricing.

In the years since I have been disgusted every time I needed something. Sometimes they had what I was after, but they had become little more than a toy store IMO. A few years ago I needed a 5v regulator for a simulator board... took three stores to find one with it in stock... and they only had 3 (which I bought/used)... since that time I have done repairs with parts salvaged from old stuff in the scrap pile or ordered online.

AFAIAC, they deserved to die and I wonder how they lasted this long. I still miss the store they once were... but hated what they devolved into. The automotive aisle at wally world is nearly as useful.

You saved me the trouble. ..Thank you

Repairrrrrr, fixxxxxxx, toss it out. Fix is what you do to your pet, as a "pet parent".

I shouldn't really whine too much, I have Skycraft in town. The problem there is overload, I could spend a day in there just trying to dig through it all.
Skycraft Parts & Surplus, Inc.
I went there once. I was so overwhelmed by it I left there unable to recall one single item I saw in my three hours there. Talk about sensory overload. Aackkk...

I completely understand, my only hope in there is to have a detailed list of what I NEED and to try not to get caught up in what I WANT or start picking stuff up thinking about new projects.

For Orlando visitors, this might be a worthwhile stop. The place is packed full of electronic and electrical surplus in a semi organized system of chaos... the stuff is vintage to modern Chinese crap... It's kinda like 1000 old TV repair shops leftovers gone wrong, and then some.

15 years ago one of the car wash kids was bright enough to go there and buy handfuls of LEDs and breadboards (barrels full of LEDs to dig through), and he would make custom taillights for the other kids motorcycles. That one didn't want to become a tech... he became an advisor.:realcrazy:

Never heard of skycraft, seems they don't carry much for potentiometer, but few places do anymore.
Online is the way it works now and yes it sucks sometimes progress is a set back.
RadioShack 100K Dual-Ganged Stereo Volume Control
Their online presence is a joke.... They may have none of those, but more likely will have a barrel of 10,000 for you to sift through to find what you want. They are a surplus store and mildly organized at best.

You can't really deal with them except in person...

I buy all my electronic goodies from DigiKey. If they don't have it, it probably doesn't exist. I've internet ordered from them at 4PM and the goodies were delivered the next day at 9 AM - not too shabby!

We have an electronics place here that has just about everything. It's been around forever.... It's one of those places that you kinda need to know what you want and what you are doing... Unless you have some oddball thing that a counter guy takes a liking to.

The owner... (I'm not sure if he's still there or not) is a genuine character. The last time I saw him, he was going on about some mysterious satellite that has been orbiting the earth. No one knows where it's from but they all know it's there. His kids work there and they are all survivalists.

I used to go there all the time when I worked near there. Interesting place.... and cash only.

For Stan...

Jeff are any of those for sale? I need one for an un-named as yet project. Mid 70's to early 80's
Not actively, the 90's one was a recent junkyard piece I haven't bothered to test yet. The 70's ones are untested except for the one in the NYB... and I have an antenna issue there I never bothered to fool with.

None are unavailable under the "friends and family plan"... PM for specifics, it may take a little while, but I would be inclined to test any of them in the NYB prior to shipping.
