Simple question. I am wanting to figure out which gear is in my car (66 Fury III, 318 Poly Motor, 727 Trans).

I see the numbers stamped on the side of it and a little tag below them.

Which of these are the ID for the rear gear thats in the car?

What ratio is most likely in it? I cant hardly make out the tag. It looks like 6P8 but that can't be right.

2.91 or 3.23
That's why owning the Factory Service Manual is 100% essential.

I don't think Chrysler broke down the numbers that far.
But for 65- 68.........
> my money is 2.92 on opens and 3.23 on sure-grips in his case and almost across the board.

I have the factory manual but it didn't tell me which was in it. The factory manual is good but is not explicit enough to make a 100% conclusion. Telling me to get a factory manual every time I have a question is not helpful. If the factory manual has all the answers we don't need tech sections on the forum.

It appears I maybe reading it upside down or backwards. Are the tags usually where you can read them like the stamped numbers on the housing?

The tags are usually on the center section under a but on one of the bolts. Its dirty and greasy... Clean it up a bit and put a light on it to see it.

Out of 5 parts cars 1967-1968. 4 of them had the 2.76 Opens. One had a 2.94 open. All were 8 3/4 rears. The 2.94 open was in the 67 vip 318 car. The 3 68 fury's all 318 cars, and the 68 monaco with a 383 had the 2.76.

I've never looked at mine. Do the tags have the actual ratio stamped on them, 2.76, 2.91, 3.23, 3.55, ect. or do they use a code that you have to look up, for example B73, K27, R9, etc?

(I just made up those codes as an example.):)

Will have the ratio

2.94 open in the Imp.

My 65 Sport Fury had 3.23 w/sure-grip but I swapped that out for a 3.91 Sure-grip. I am tempted to swap the 3.91 for a 3.55 (I am on the fence about that).

74 Imperial 4 Dr- 9.25 Diff, 2.76 Sure Grip
74 Imperial 2 Dr- 9.25 Diff, 3.23 Sure Grip
77 T&C- 9.25 Diff, Have no idea. Open

Most C bodies I've dealt with over the years have been 2.76s.
