Rear speaker(s) questions for Convertible

Here is a picture of how it looks in my 68 Fury III convertible. I bought a speaker and fader kit (original) and mounted it as described in the manual. It was a cover over the speaker hole before of the same material as the back of the seat.

Can you take a picture looking from the top of the speaker down to show how much of the speaker magnet is sticking out past the back of the seat? You may need to make your self a cover for the back of the speaker and attach it to the seat. This was why in my back speaker cover I cut a round hole just big enough for the speaker magnet to pass though. I trimmed the edge of the hole with a nice fitting automotive weather strip I had to stop any rubbing on the magnet as well as to seal up the speaker box area in order to give it better sound. It’s not a perfect solution but it’s a lot better than what was there which was no speaker at all (it was missing) Every thing I have done can be easily removed and put back to stock if so desired.

The magnet sticks out around 1 inch. Here is 2 pictures one from the top and one from the bottom.

Well in this situation I would probably get some 1 1/2 square wood then use it to trim out the back of your speaker in a nice rectangular shape then use a thin plywood or press board cut to fit and screw it onto your 1 1/2 wood trim. Paint it all black. Your speaker will be boxed and it won’t interfere with your roof. You could go the same route as me and just make a cover with a hole the magnet can go through. It all depends on what you want to do. You will have to remove your seat to do a good job it makes things a lot easier.

So....is everyone telling me this hole is factory?

I am working off of your picture and have not seen it in person, but yes, it appears to be factory. I have a 68 Sport Fury convertible and your picture looks very much like my rear speaker hole, and it is factory.

Thanks! I believe based on all the wiring that the hole was carved to use for an aftermarket system. The AM radio doesn't have a fader control.
I guess I'll replace the ruined material and try to repair the grille

Hey Al
I have talked to a guy that has original screen material and a pattern to cut it to.
I will have him send me 2 of them so you will have one too.
See ya soon

Here are a couple of pictures of the back side of the rear seat speaker in my 1968 Sport Fury convertible. This is all original and only missing the thin black plastic cover that disintegrated after almost 40 years. Hopefully these pictures will help you determine if yours has been altered from stock or if it is still factory. The first picture is looking through the back window from the passenger side and the second picture is looking down through the window to show you how far the speaker extends out from its mount.

Mine is hacked up mess. So I'll be making a new panel once I get the replacement grille

Thanks Galen!

If you can change a tire you can make a new speaker grill out of perforated stainless , it’s just that easy. it might cost you 10 bucks. I got enough stainless to do 3 screens for 17 bucks. I trimmed it to fit with metal snips. The whole job took 4 1/2 beers.

Here are some pictures of my speaker trim and mount when I was working on it. I replaced the badly beat up aluminum cover with some new perforated stainless steel material that I picked up at local specialty metal shop and trimmed it to fit into the chrome trim. I left the stainless unpolished because I liked the way it looked in the chrome trim with the chrome Plymouth emblem on it. I then removed what was left of the argent paint from the trim for repaint but I liked the contrast of the the chrome against the stainless steel so much I decided to leave it that way. Very interesting thread. That perforated material looks like the mesh inside of a pipe strainer, only the car stuff is flat. I need to do the same to my rear speaker cover obviously.
