We used to call it a church key
I was about nine when C.W. McCall came out with “Wolf Creek Pass,” and its line about “drinking Nehis and onion soup mix” confused me. The only term I had heard with that pronunciation was “knee-highs.”rite of passage ... learning how to use one (hand strength, coordination, etc) so Dad didnt have to open my "drink" of choice for me as a youngster in the '60's

As a kid, my favorite “character” was the Dodge truck shown here. I loved seeing it in action!
Man I would’ve loved that as a kid! And/or I would’ve kvetched that it wasn’t modeled after a Chrysler.

When I was a kid we had to improvise... one of my long time childhood friends unbolted the top of a transmission of a dump truck that was left on the construction site of this new development of this old farm bordering on my backyard to take the whole shift lever home which I thought was "oh boy were going to get in trouble now" from our weekend playground. A couple of us had already asked the construction workers if we could take scrap lumber laying on the ground to use to build our tree house to which they said sure OK. But then word got out as the development was going full steam and the kids over in the richer neighborhood on the other side of my elementary school started stealing 4x8 sheets of plywood to build a 2 story treehouse and then the cops got involved. I remember my friend telling me when the cops came to his house on a Saturday right when he was watching a Winston Cup race on TV and he was using the shifter to mimic the stock cars drivers as he sat in his chair watching the show. Cops walked right in as he had the shifter in his hand... I don't know how they found out it was him that took it (wasn't me).I had one. Spent many hours driving the living room chair. I used to see these in a Colonial grocery store located on Lakeside Ave in Henrico County (just north of Richmond, VA) when I was a child. I wanted one real bad for Christmas one year, but Santa Claus brought me a large scale train set with a locomotive that released smoke from its stack. Great choice Santa!!
