Replacing a Subframe 65 Polara 500 Convertible

Speaking only for the 69s to 73's The Fury stub is supposed to be shorter compared to the Chrysler Dodge counterpart

Tweaking the subframe dimension allowed for changes in the wheelbase of the car.

I'd have to look in to this some, I have always felt the extra space was added to the back seat.
Changes in the frame or its placement would cause many other changes in parts that couly otherwise be standardized.

I don't have the earlier parts books but looking at 69, 70, 71, 73 the Car Line didn't impact what frame was used.
In 69 all Lines and Bodies used the same one.
In 70 the hardtops and sedans used one and the wagons, convertibles and police used another.
In 71 all used the same one used for the 70 hardtops and sedans
In 73 the Dodge & Plymouth shared one while the Chrysler used another
In all years the Imperial had its own.

Look again at the 70

It's not totally original, been recovered for sure and I didn't do it so I can't verify the seats are the originals, they're actually in the basement right now. I do have a few others though, so I can come up with pics of the proper seats and such.

Well, visually the 1970-1973 HT and sedan stubs are different:

HT/sedan (at least this is similar to what mine looks like):

Convertible (again, similar to what my vert looks like. Apologies, Alan, I lifted this photo from one of your posts):

Those extra extensions on the end of the HT frame create mounting differences to the vert. You actually loose two to four mounting points, depending on the mods.

All that being said, I think that the OP still needs to check measurements before deciding on the interchange.

Apologies to the OP for the off-topic, I've been a little obsessed with stub frames these past few months.

oops just saw it, looks like the 70/71 plymouth was different but I doubt it was for wheelbase issues.

Alan

Interesting how the coup has the same part number, but physically they are different from the vert. Another reason not to go strictly by part numbers.

Right...you didn't mention two doors....(cp) ... I went all through the part numbers for the 70 and 71 in the other frame thread months ago

Unless specifically identified Coupes are in ALL or Hardtops the CV.CP. is a Convertible.

so you are seeing them calling the convertible a CV ,CP?....Hmmm,, didn't consider that on this one...

How would I measure to be sure? I figured take lots of pictures of mine to have visual references. In these 65's the part numbers are all the same but Should there be any extra bracing for the convertible?

And it is not a problem to get a little off topic, I am members of other forums where this happens regularly.

Thanks

First time I saw it was years ago and it threw me, anywhere you see CV.CP. in the parts book it is a Convertible and not a Coupe or Hardtop.

Otherwise 4D.H.T or 2D.H.T or Sp. 2D.H.T.

I can't think of a Coupe in these years, some later but hey fell into 2 door hard top.

A coupe was used for cars without an operable rear side window or pop-out rear side windows (this can be debated).

Extra bracing is typically done through beefier rocker panels and the direct to body stub frame mounts. You should get a factory service manual (FSM) and it will have all the frame measurements you need.

Well, I don't know how much use it could be but i do have a spare 1968 Chrysler Newport 2 door stubframe, it's in North Carolina.

Just measure the distance from your front (radiator support)mounting hole to the rear outer bolt hole(the one that goes down thru the floorpan. Then measure across the two outer rear holes that go horizontally alongside the inner rocker panel on the subframe. Also measure between your two mid point mounts(the ones just below the firewall.Compare these measurements to the other frame you plan on using. All the additional bracing for your convertible should be within the rockers and the floor bracing and rear frame rails.Anything basically forward of the firewall is just there to support the engine and front end sheet metal.
