Did the owner tell you what happened just before the BIG BANG? Was he revving the engine to it's limits on a street fight or something?
 
The pictures a little fuzzy but I don't see evidence of gasket failure. Any burnt valves....?
Looks like a lean mixture or incorrect timing. Or real cheap gas.
 
Looks like a dropped valve, but when that happens there is usually a lot more damage to the cylinder wall and the piston. Well. . . he for sure wasn't using 2-cycle marine oil with TCW-3. . .

I agree but where are the valves?
It sure looks like a nice round valve face but it could have just got stuck when firing up.
 
I'm with Dave on this one. The hole in the piston appears to be the problem but it could also be the thermostat.
