Searching for return line on fuel system

Hi folks. New to the forum. Here’s the scoop: 1961 Chrysler Newport. 361 automatic. Spent the day wrestling with rusty nuts and bolts but got the old fuel tank out and the new one in. After hooking up the fuel return line on the new tank I began to trace it forward towards the engine and lo and behold it just stops and points down almost like a vent. My question is- is this a hack from a previous owner is there really no return line? The carb is. A 2 barrel stromberg WWC. I would have looked further on the carb for the mysterious return but got lazy and decided to “research this further”. Anyone have any thoughts?
 
Hello. There is no return line from the carb. If you would like to add a return line you can use a fuel filter designed for the 76 Chrysler v8s, it has a small metered return nipple. WIX 33040 WIX 33054.

The new fuel tank I put in has one. That's why I questioned where it should end up.

Are you thinking that a vent line is a return line?

Some tanks have 2 vent lines. Back in the early 60's I highly doubt any cars had return lines. Because why? Vapor lock?
 
If you mean this tube marked by the arrow, it's a vent line. Older cars vent to the atmosphere. No return line... In fact, if you did hook that up as a return line, it probably would cause problems in fuel delivery as there would be no vent. (Picture from the Factory Service Manual)

Hi. If you are talking about the two 1/4 inch lines on right side of this picture, those are vent lines.
These are on a 1970 Plymouth Fury, but same principle. With the gas cap on, gas tank needs to be able to let air in as fuel level drops.

This is exactly the scenario as pictured above. Vent tube. Got it. Thanks everyone for helping me out. (btw, service manual ordered and on the way)
