Old Man with a Hat
Just down the coast from San Francisco is a location where some really massive waves can come in during the storm season. There is actually a contest held there called The Maverick where the call goes out to top surfers around the world to drop everything and show up. They actually do drop everything and show up. This week the waves were up to 50' in the face and deemed too dangerous to ride for the contest because the water was so choppy. Locals were out though and some are known world wide. Here is one such guy who actually took on one the 50' waves. He didn't get far and ended up getting arm and shoulder surgery later on that day.
I can only imagine was it was like under all that surf washing you to the shore. I used to body surf and take on some waves up 10-15 feet high. When I missed one at that upper limit I was rolled along the bottom quite a distance before I could get my head above water and breath some air. The water pressure above doesn't let you surface until it diminishes.
