This is the way I understood it.
U code = 4bbl. Period. Regardless of cu. in.
V code = 6bbl. Period. Regardless of cu. in.

Had there been an 383 6bbl, it would have been a V code.

In general, the further up the alphabet the more CID and carbs. Adding new engines, like the 360, pushed the remaining engines "up" a little. A 70 383-6bbl would have probably coded "P".

:poke: You forgot the K code Pursuit Commando 360 HP version of the 440!

AFAIK, in 1970, a K designation is for 360 CID, not a 360 horse 440. If there was such a version of a 440 and with the realinment of Vin codes for 1970, one would expect to find a 4th version of a 440 in the range of S, with RB engines, not K with LA and B series. My two cents...
 
Technically the 360 didn't start until 1971 although there were some 360 test cars in 70.

The k code would have been in the VIN as DK or PK wouldn't it? Not as in say PL43K0D....

The second letter designates the sub model of the line. In that position, the K simply tells us it's a cop car. The fifth position in the VIN indicates the engine. So the VIN would read PK43K0D...

Although from previous posts, I think he is referring to 1969 VINs.
